Coral Boring Spionid Worms- Anybody Killed them?

This is how elusive they are, and why nobody knows that they’re in their system. These are newborn babies just ready to infect your SPS. As you could probably imagine doing an in- tank treatment is about the only way to eradicate them. I’ve been able to find them in about every system I’ve visited locally. That Acro you’ve been waiting on to grow for two years that’s not doing anything might just have these in the skeleton or base irritating it.

This is what my turbo snails looked like.....I covered their entire shell with super glue. The spionids bored into the snail and died there after doing this twice. They are both completely clear now. Just hoping they didn't get into the water/rock/sand. I haven't seen them, but never really know for sure.

Equipment and anticipation are mounting. Good news…I will be doing some pre/post Aquabiomics testing. Also have a ICP-MS analysis that will result this week and will send another in two weeks after treatment is completed and system is stabilized. Interesting stuff ahead.

Has anyone seen them spread? I placed my frag that had the worms on my frag rack with a good 2” radius from others. It’s been there for about 8 months now and I haven’t seen the worm on anything else but that frag.

Absolutely, they can spread like crazy, especially in the right chemistry.

I had a raja rampage I was growing out from frag to 8” disk and they bored holes right through the middle about 5 months ago. Put large holes right in the middle of the colony. I used gorilla super glue and glued up the live rock holes they lived in. The chalice spent the next 6 months growing larger and larger and the holes were recovering. Then out of the blue for no reason I can identify, the whole colony rapidly declined and I lost it. I feel it was infection caused by their damage, or they were coming back. I tossed the rock

Grew this from a small frag. Everything fine

One day (I don’t have pics I started to develop holes inn the colony. I found it was a bunch of those boring worms. Didn’t know much about them but if I plucked them they returned. I was able to see the rock through the hole so I filled the live rock pores with gorilla super glue gel.

The chalice recovered for months filling in the holes and regrowing to seal them off

Then out of nowhere the chalice rapidly declined. Like from perfect to near death in a week

Upon close inspection…more holes forming all over

Tiny ones. I couldn’t dip. It was attached to two pieces of rock. I removed the whole thing and tossed it. It got worse every day and I couldn’t do anything and assumed those two rocks were compromised

My bad. I haven’t had time to read the whole thread so if this is covered I apologize. Is Fendendazole safe for corals?
I ask because I do equine rescue and when horses have not been wormed in years are wormed, you can have worms that are able to encrust themselves as protection against anthelmentics. Multiple doses of fendendazol is the treatment. It has a different method of action than prazi or the ectins/dectins.

It is but it does not work on spionid worms or vermetid Snails.
That was more for blue clove polyps or antibiotic for fish.

Sure. I’ve treated 40+ species of Acro’s with 1% Ivermectin as well as many others. It’s nuking the worms and about everything else. Excellent dip. Corals respond well even at extremely high concentrations. Not one casualty yet for me.

I do…but it doesn’t work on the spionid worms I have, and my friend is the one selling the product. I did several dips up to 1 hr. They didn’t die.

I don’t push products for pests that they will not work on. If you want it for a general dip for other pests, it works well. Found it to be gentle. You can find it on the Reef Moonshiner’s web store.

There are some people testing a low-dose Fenbendazole with positive results from a medicated flake food and keeping it hush hush. Takes months though. Long term it seems to kill AEfW, Spinoid, and the other worms. That’s the rumor anyway! I don’t have that kind of time to wait on something that isn’t 100% confirmed. Would definitely be helpful for internal fish parasites. A lot of pests/parasites enter our systems from the fishes fecal matter.

I haven’t noticed them in my tank. Just have a hatred of nematodes. Having a farm, I deal with drug resistance a lot. I don’t think that applies to marine situations except maybe in the case of prazipro. Fenbendazole is available as a feed through wormer for several livestock species so interesting they are trying it as a feed through for fish.

That’s about where I’m at. I finally avoided Vermetid snails though blood sweat and tears of sterile conditions trying to keep them out in the beginning only to realize boring Spionid worms are worse and even more annoying. I always hated when I had a beautiful acro base with freakin’ Vermetid snails coming up through it. That’s super annoying! When you break the little dirt tubes of Spionid’s, they multiply much faster and make a bigger colony. Frustrating! See pic below. Do you want a beautiful acro base in your pictures or a base full of Spionid dirt spike tubes. It really slows down some corals and takes away my joy. Looking at them daily starts to wear on you.
