Just wondering if anyone could id this mystery frag. It is encrusted all the way around the plug, seems short and fuzzy when blowing in the flow but is hard to the touch. Got it as a freebie from a lfs, just trying to figure out care requirements. Im not even sure which side is up :( I took a video but not sure how/if it can be uploaded.

hi, welcome to the reef... :)
Caribbean Star coral ??

There are no Atlantic/Caribbean stony corals in the hobby, so it wouldn't be a star coral. I would say it is either a pavona or a leptoseris.
incorrect.
Caribbean Star on the rear glass... ;)

Either you or the person you got it from misidentified the coral, or you have that coral illegally. It is illegal to collect caribbean stony corals.

I addition, if it come on live rock collected from a legal lease site, then it is legal to possess. Yet, you cannot sell or trade it. Give it away, yes. The laws on Florida Stoney corals are strict as can be, but you can still have in your possession.

For example, it come on live rock that is legally collected - ok

You have it from an SW tank pre ban - ok, but may be required to show proof you had the coral pre ban. (Picture of old tank and the coral for example)

Just go look at all the coral ID threads from Florida based live rock sales. Lots of Florida stoneys in tanks now lol.

Oh, so that's how you got a Caribbean coral. One more thing, when I search up 'star coral,' it just shows montastraea, which is definitely not what your coral is. I'm guessing your coral is in the family agariciidae. What genus is your coral?

Also, @AngiGiles coral was probably sold to him after the 1976 ban, so it is probably not a Caribbean coral.

Is there a way to post a video? The lfs just said "I have 3 of thse all the way encrusted, you can just have that one" I can't even remember for sure which side was upright, but I'd like to know how to care for it better. I'll try for some better pics.

Ok, here are some ss from the video, tried to get the edges and some better details. Also, where are my manners.. I'm Angi, just getting into saltwater again after a miserable attempt over 20yrs ago haha thank for all you're replies and I'm happy to be here, learning from you fine folks

The side with the "bump" is the side I've kept up.. was hoping that was the top, but truthfully, never looked at all the detail on the "bottom" until I was trying to figure out the names of everything in my tank haha could have been the first name I wrote down..

Looks just like this

hi, Angi, nice piece ,not sure on your id, sorry about the lil debate here...;)
Either or i would place coral on edge somehow, mod light, moderate flow.
should be able to tell which way is "up" by the growth pattern on the coral.
Let's see if we cannot get you a positive id.

Could be blue leptoseris. Something about it is throwing me off. I can look at a lepto and say "100% lepto." Sorry not tonight. Chances are it's a lepto. But, it could very well be something else. That close up...

I dont agree on lepto.
