Coral ID

Could be blue leptoseris. Something about it is throwing me off. I can look at a lepto and say "100% lepto." Sorry not tonight. Chances are it's a lepto. But, it could very well be something else. That close up...

I dont agree on lepto.

Which ever it is, moderate light to bring in the colors. Some need more, some need less.

Good luck on id. I am stumped. If it is a lepto... Mine were never fuzzy.

Oh it doesn't FEEL fuzzy, it just looks like.. kinda of like velvet, not the bad kind hah I've been looking at tons of pics every time someone suggested a maybe. At least I'm learning.

It's a stony coral. It won't feel fuzzy at all. It has polyps. Star like polyps. That's what's throwing me off. Listen to @fishguy242. And @Eagle_Steve

You got the frag for free yes?

Yes I did. I had it up high (not great lights, thankfully -who says that??-) and right in the flow.. I noticed while taking the pics that the flesh is like, frayed and missing.. can I do anything for that? Wishing I'd have asked sooner..

It will heal. Don't let the water directly blast any coral. It strips the flesh off. Medium flow should be fine. Keep detectable nitrates and phosphates , keep an eye on water chemistry. The piece should recover.

Pics under blue with orange filter ,close to true look .

So, do you guys have any ideas on how to grow this guy up/out/whatever it's supposed to do? We just made a diy frag rack and I was thinking of balancing it on the tips of a chunk of rubble so it would perhaps grow in "any" direction.. would I attach it somehow? Glue would have to be on the coral itself, so I'm thinking no attaching?

would just try to determine which way is up,
then lodge in between 2-3 smaller rocks/rubble ,it will grab hold in no time... :)

Just a little update, I think it's "doing", seems to be growing, changing colors, and healing. It had 2 spots of flesh dying, now one has healed and I'm "monitoring" the larger one.. not that I'd know what to do, but that's what you guys are for! Haha here's some pics 20220629_232445.jpg 20220629_232455.jpg 20220629_232505.jpg

Leptastrea?

One thing, when I search up 'star coral,' it just shows montastraea, which is definitely not what your coral is.
Hi, welcome to the reef.
We learn something new every day.
