The back wall should disappear to every extent possible, in my opinion.

I designed my setup with black back to be accessible for scraping. Also went with a Modular Marine overflow for the removable weir. My weir and powerheads will get vinegar'd every 60 days or so and the back will will remain black if I can help it.

The contrast between the black back wall and the rest of the life is important for me to enjoy the system's appearance.
