So anyone tried using coralline in a bottle? I just got mine in today and getting ready to put into tank. Just wondering if any of u have used before and what results did u get out of it

I got a bottle of pink because I had lots of purple, but could never get pink in the tank just the purple I had. I never ended up with pink though.
The paper it came with says it has many varieties of coralline in it so maybe the purple was the strongest in your bottle

I used both bottles in my tank that was started with macro rock. I am about 6 months in and I see little patches of coralline. Im not sure if i would do it again, seems like a waste of money. My coralline hasn't really spread and could have been just as easily introduced through a snail or a frag. I have mostly pink patches

Awesome! Good to know i didnt just throw in a small bottle of expensive water in tank

I'd be patient with it. It took a long time to catch hold, mostly due to tank age and readiness to house corals.

You're not wrong, as it's basically a scraping of coralline in a bottle of water.

I used it because I wanted to reduce the chance of hitch hikers. I used a pink bottle and a purple bottle.

You could also get it from a small piece of live rock or a canary coral, or like someone said above, from a snail with coralline on its shell, but higher risk imo.

I have 3 tanks for years now, none have any coralline algae in them. In one tank I used a bottle of purple helix and just like the bottle said within 2 months purple coralline algae was growing. It grew everywhere and I was very happy. Then I used Vibrant to kill some green hair algae(GHA). The Vibrant killed just about everything(coralline algae, my BTA, most SPS) but the GHA, that grew even more. I've never had any luck growing coralline algae that comes in on coral frags, snail shells, etc.
My take---the purple helix coralline algae in a bottle works great. NEVER use Vibrant, it's not what they say it is.

Wow sorry to hear about the vibrant situation. I have heard extremely positives and extremely negatives...... But glad to hear the algae in a bottle does work or at least help start it

To note, I only found out recently, the purple coralline I got from it turns neon pink if exposed to air, then back to purple later. Kind of cool seeing multi color snails sliming around.

That sounds awesome

I got mine years ago, both pink and purple in same bottle. Works great if your water and light are ready.

Yea I will second this and caveat that when I did mine my salinity was slightly off from their instructions. The instructions that came with the bottles are pretty specific and could be conducive to growing coralline faster.

That’s a signal for death. The algae is releasing the zooxanthelle. It can recover if put back in the water or you fix whatever parameter is killing it. But the hot pink is signs that it’s on its way out. Kinda cool but not desirable if you want it to stick around.

This was my experience also. I do have some pink coralline on a few frag plugs but that could of came from anywhere. I will be skipping any algae in a bottle with tanks I set up down the road.

Although we understand that many reefers want to get that purple look ASAP, these bottles do help. But if your patient it will come sooner than you know it naturally once introduced to your system.
