Well, it's that Petco sale time of year again, and there's plenty of new 40s going up. This is mine. I've had a 40B before and loved it but took it down when I got married and combined households. I initially convinced the Mrs. to let me setup a 10g, and after a year of prodding and then working ridiculous hours on building us a new little home I've managed to get the go ahead on this upgrade. This is likely to be a slow go thread as I'm still gathering items and trying to determine exactly what kind of gear I'm wanting to put on the tank, buts a few things I've got going so far.

I've got the tank, an Eshopps nano refugium/sump, an Eshopps eclipse M and I'm using an older Syncra silent 2 for the return. Still trying to determine what I'm going to use for lighting and circulation. Considering 2 Hydra 26s and a single MP40, but that's really pushing my budget. May use Jebao pumps in the interim while I build up additional funds.

So the adventure begins:

Found a cabinet that was getting tossed in the burn pile that I'm going to try and use for a stand.

I've got the tank drilled and the overflow setup, something I've never done till now. I'm currently using a ball valve but will be getting a gate valve soon. That ball valve is simply a pain to make fine adjustments to. Here's an issue I'm having. I can manage to get the overflows back box to be pretty silent, but the water flowing through the teeth of the weir sounds like a fountain... I pulled some of the black filter mesh stuff out of the sump and stuffed it into the front box and it helps tremendously but I don't want to have to do that. Anyone have suggestions or experience with these overflow boxes?

lower your flow of the return pump, If Anything stick the Ball Valve on the Return not on your Drain.

Thanks. I don't want to dial down the return I'm liking the flow it's pushing. I think I figured it out though. If I adjust my drain to where I just barely have water tricking over my emergency drain it's completely silent. This is my first go at a drilled tank so I'm learning as I go.

Is that a chair under that filled tank?? You are brave my friend!

LOL no it's a metal table... it's sturdy as all get out.
A fellow Abita brewing company fan! I love it. Excellent build so far I love your stand!
Abita is a home brewed beer. They even have one named "The Boot" that is only sold in Louisiana. They won't ship it across state lines.

Made a little headway this weekend. Wife wanted the stand to match some other furniture so I put on a couple base coats of white followed up with a finish coat of antique white. Found a great deal on a granite top and I think the stand looks great, if I say so myself. Still have to get lights and power heads and everything else, but it's coming along. I'm probably going to order an MP 40 this week since they are on sale. Haven't completely made up my mind but I'm leaning towards 2 Hydra 26HDs for lighting. Id like t5s with a couple reefbrite xho but that's a bit out of budget and the fixture I'd want only has hanging mounts.

Nice work so far! I am in the process of setting up a 40b right now as well. I have a 75G too but needed something in the middle of my 30G and 75G!

How did the drilling go? Thats the part that worries me the most haha!
I am also going to go with the Eclipse overflow

Drilling was a breeze. Took about 5 minutes total to get through the glass and that's counting stopping to let the glass cool and seeing how far I needed to go. You literally just let the weight of the drill drive the hole saw. I still have to drill the return hole, but I haven't decided on the placement just yet. Was thinking about putting it toward the right side of the tank, but now that I'm probably going to put an MP40 on the right side panel, I may put it the middle and put a "Y" on it. Oh decisions, decisions...

Congratulations on your new tank, very nice stand!!:)

Give you an idea of my 40 gallon breeder, went with a bigger sump so i can use it eventually on bigger tank and went with the eshopps medium over flow box as well and i love it, very quiet, any help you need let me know and welcome.

did either of you guys have any problems with the bottom bulkheads coming out of the rear box?
I got the Large box and I can't get the bulkheads out of the rear box to stop leaking... I have tried multiple degrees of tightness, un screwing and re tightening the nuts. ive got it down to a small drip but that's still not good enough! I really don't want to slap a bunch of silicone all over everything to seal it up. And the biggest problem is my plumbing is all glued directly into the bulkheads already. Might have to call eshopps and see if I can get new ones at this point so I can saw off the original ones

i had a small leak from the box it self between the glass and all i did was flip the seals and leak was gone, and do you mean the bulk heads going into the sump? If so try flipping the seal on the bulk head and see if that works .

and do you mean the bulk heads going into the sump?.

Not the ones that enter the sump the ones that drain out the bottom of the clear rear box of the overflow. All my hard piping is glued already so I might not be able to flip those seals without destroying the bulkheads. but buying new bulkheads is still cheaper than a whole new overflow
