Crush coral or sand bed?

I didn't have any sand dwellers but I know jaw fish like some rubble and the 3 inches of sand provided more than enough for one if I wanted too have a sand dweller. I had and have a sand shifting star and he did very well.

I use crushed coral on my 100 with no problems. Just have to know how to keep it clean. I do weakly water changes. Nitrates are at 5 ppm. On my 30 I have black hawaiian sand and it's just to messy when I do water changes. I siphon out about a cup of sand or more every time. It's annoying. When it's gone I will add crushed coral. I realy like it when the crushed coral starts turning purple with coralina algae. You can use anything that looks good to you just know how to keep it clean.
