Cups into grams and US gallons into litre - dosing

So.... I'm working out some numbers for dosing. You've guessed it, I'm struggling ha ha.

I've googled cups into grams and I guess it's all about which units? For example, I'm looking to work out correct numbers to make up 1 uk litre of alk, cal and mag stock solutions.

Ingredients being used;

Sodium bicarbonate 99+%. NaHCO3 - please can I have the amount in grams per uk litre for this as well as once it's baked?

Calcium chloride dihydrate flake 77%. CaCl2.2H2O - please can I have the amounts in grams per uk litre?

On the above two, is there a specific ratio on what they should be dosed at?

Please note the below need to be measured at the ratio to counterbalance the remaining elements.

Magnesium chloride hexahydrate flake MgCl26H2O - grams per uk litre?

Magnesium sulphate heptahydrate MgSO4.7H2O - grams per uk litre?

For the alk part, take 157 grams of sodium bicarbonate and spread on a cookie sheet and bake for one hour at 150 C (300 F). You now have sodium carbonate. When it has cooled enough to handle, mix with RO/DI to make one liter.....for you Brits, litre. :D

For the calc part, 132 grams to one liter of RO/DI.

These recipes came from HERE, and converted to grams per liter

I'm guessing the math was 594/3.8 = 157 which I had in mind, however once baked will the new weight in grams be right for sodium carbonate into 1 litre rodi?

Please do get back to me with all other calculations as I really need another opinion on my calculations. Thank you.

Now for the MAG part, Dr. Holmes Farley used volumes, so I'm going to give it to you in mls per liter.

Take 188 mls Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) and 313 mls magnesium chloride and make up to one liter with RO/DI water.
 
You can’t make cups into grams as what fits in a cup will have different density and weights. Ie one cup water , one cup feathers.

Thank you, here in the uk I hear people discussing you cannot dissolve more than 100g of sodium bicarbonate in 1L of rodi.

If I look at the math of Dr. Holmes being 594g into 3.8L and reduce it down to 594g/3.8= 156g per litre?

Yes, sodium BIcarbonate solubility is (to pick a number) about half of sodium carbonate. By baking the sodium bicarbonate, it drives off a carbon dioxide, producing sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate is more soluble and that's why you're using 156 grams per liter. If you wish to not bake the baking soda, use half the amount to one liter.

Ok, looking at the cup ratio is it me or has there been an error by Dr. Holmes?

Above it suggests to use 3 cups of chloride and 5 sulphate...

...Below it advises to use the same ratio but salts reversed. 3 cups sulphate and 5 chloride?

It's possible he made a mistake with his forum post. I would trust what's in the article. The article on two-part has likely been read by thousands of reefers. If there were any errors, they would have been spotted and corrected by now. What also may be confusing is that there are a few different recipes for magnesium to keep chloride and sulfate in balance. Be sure you choose the right recipe for your situation.

Randy's article should really be the definitive source. In some cases he references gallons or cups, but almost all ingredients have a "grams to gallon" measurement listed somewhere. If you prefer liters, multiple the weight in grams by 0.263 to get the amount in grams to put in one liter. Don't worry about cups, ounces or fluid ounces. Go with the part of the article that says "put this many grams in this much water" and you'll be good :)

Thanks, my situation is untouched. I've a 40L after displacement and looking to belong dosing using above specified salts. I'm clearly overthinking as in usually good with numbers, but it's clear I just don't want to make an error as my tank is tiny.

Dr. Holmes is magnificent, I just need a little help working the numbers as requested above.

Can I kindly ask where you got the 132g from on the cal part as going by the 0.263 conversion then Dr. Holmes numbers are 500g so that gives me 131g?

500 gram/us gallon ÷ 3.79 liters/us gallon = 132 grams/liter

The gram difference is within error....all is good.
 
So are we looking at;

156g/L sodium bicarbonate (baked)
132g/L calcium chloride dihydrate
179g/L magnesium sulphate
298g/L magnesium chloride hexahydrate
