I have a 36 gallon bowfront that I have had set up for awhile. I orginally just planned on keeping fish in it but the more that I have looked at corals, the more interested I become. The main issue is the hood that came with the tank has poor lighting. I want to build a custom lid for it for better lighting. I thought about building a plexiglass or acrylic lid, but I am not sure if it will interfere with the lighting in the tank. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is that a Biocube? They make retrofits for the lights.
Don't make a lid out of plexi/acrylic, as it will seal the tank tight and cause the temp to rise. It will also allow for condensation on the lid, which will impact lighting.

No it is a topfin 36 gallon bowfront. Thanks for the tip though. I guess I will have to find a way to make one using screen.

This post has a link to someone who custom makes screen tops for a very high end look and also a very cheap method by essentially bending window screen.
