Cutting and attaching molding to stand

having some trouble here. First time with molding. I cut it at a 45 on a miter. When i try to test placement on the stand the edges dont align unless the opposite ends are off of the stand. What am I doing wrong? More pics can be taken if needed

It appears to be crown molding. There are two ways to cut outside corners....and I'm assuming we're talking about outside corners. One way, if you have a fence high enough, is to hold the molding as if it's on the wall...at an angle. But here's a way to simply lay the molding flat on the table surface of the miter saw. This is a compound cut....that is you need to set two angles. The saw itself needs to be set at 33.9 degrees. That is the saw itself is actuall tilted.....at the back of the miter saw The table is then set to 31.6 degrees. Many miter saws have these setting marked....my saw has them. Here's my saw set to cut an outside right miter for crown molding. I didn't have any crown, so imagine that board is crown...lay it flat on the table and cut. For a left cut, just the opposite. Hope this helps.

The way I explained, you need to lay the molding flat on the table part of the saw.....just like in my picture.


EDIT TO ADD: If you wish to cut the other way.....holding the molding like it's up against the wall......Flip it upside down and hold like it's installed....against the fence and table of the saw. With the miter saw set for 45 degrees, cut. The issue with this method is that many "homeowners" miters don't have high fences. The Dewalt I have has the high fence. Hope this helps.

Ok. With the method you explained originally is it face up or face down? It appears as tho my black and decker is marked for those cuts

Here's a picture of method 2.....(I found a piece of crown)....with the molding upside down and the saw set at 90 degrees with the table at 45 degrees, cut. I took the picture this way so that you can see that the molding has to be held at the angles it would be when hung. My saw has special clamps to hold this angle. But again, I think you would be better off using the first method I explained.

Since I found the crown, hopefully this is more understandable.....Method 1, saw at 33.9, table at 31.6, molding flat on the table. Picture looking down at the table.

Went to try the cuts using the method you gave. But the miter saw only leans one direction. Am i not getting something

Ok. So its standard for a miter to lean only left.

I have cut and installed a lot of crown molding, but I always make a template for both the outside and inside corners to avoid mistakes. The methods that can be utilized depend on what saw you use. One idea that might help is that crown molding is essentially made to fill corners and would be the same if it were a solid corner with a milled face. If you set up stops on lyour saw you can position it as it will be on the project and see more easily how it should be cut. If your fence isn't tall enough add a backer board in front of it to give u a some height...that's what I did..

Steve, first off, looks good. Now, maybe it's me or the angle of the picture, but that doesn't look like crown......it looks like it's flat mounted. How did the cutting go?

I thought it was moulding as well but someone on here said it was crown..... Matter of fact redfishbluefish. I went through a lot of moulding to get it right with angles and measurements
