Cyano or Dino’s?

I need to know which one this is so I can treat it. It reminds me of Dino’s, but if it’s not Dino’s then it’s cyano. But one means my tank is too clean and the other means it’s too dirty. Considering that I just did a 7 out of 12 gallon water change last night I feel like it could possibly be Dino’s. But it’s annoying some of my zoas and my mushy don’t seem to be the happiest today as they were yesterday. Usually mushys like dirtier water, so I’m kinda leaning towards Dino’s. But I’ll let y’all decide.

For a more certain ID you will need microscope pic.
There are some relatively inexpensive microscopes available on amazon.

+1 Dino's to me. Cyano is thicker and more mat like. this kind of has a webbyness to it trait of dino.

You have time. This did not occur overnight. It will not get worse or better overnight either.

before I spent money on a “maybe” fix, I would make sure what I am dealing with.

Not even all Dino’s are treated the same way.

Ive had both dinos and cyano before. Ive had a reef tank for 5 years now. This specific tank has been up for about 7 months I think.

It looks like it already is affecting some corals.

If that’s the case, I would go out and buy a UV sterilizer and place in the tank. I used a green machine which is inexpensive but does not hold up for long in saltwater. If it’s the strain of Dino’s that UV works against, you may see improvement in just a couple days. Do not do any more water changes because it may make problem worse.


UV works against certain strains of Dino’s that move from sand and rocks at night.

Forget sterilizer right now. Its a mild case you have. Do this:
Prepare for a water change and blow this stuff loose with a turkey baster and siphon up loose particles.
Turn lights off for 5 days and st night dose 1ml of hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons for all 5 nights
During the day dose 1ml of liquid bacteria per 10 gallons.
Clean filters daily and DO NOT FEED CORAL FOODS OR ADD NOPOX as it is food for dinos.
Day 5,, you can start with blue lights and work your white lights up slowly

Um, I heard peroxide will kill anemones? Plus wont the light off for 5 days kill my corals? What if I already own a sterilizer tho?

None of this worked for me with Ostreopsis. And I did many of these things for months like MB7 and blue light. This is why microscope ID is important.
As soon as I used UV it was gone within 2 days.

if you already own a UV, I would hook it up to the main tank (not the sump).
Couldn’t hurt, and may solve your problem if it’s Ostreopsis.

Maybe putting an anemone in a bucket of concentrated peroxide.

You can use the search bar and find some crazy reefers here who dose a liter worth of Peroxide a week into their tanks full of nems with no problems. (1 Liter in a 300G system)

No. . . I beat dinos twice and Many on R2r who won the battle with this method. Peroxide is mainly H2O - water.
You can run 10% blue for anemone but I went black with a huge mixed reef and No effect.

Well, guess Ill have to pull the uv filter out of the cabinet. I also have some flux rx medication or whatever. But I think that it meant mainly for bryopsis and hair algae

I agree on UV- I say for get Uv because either many aquarists dont have the money OR have to wait days for delivery of a unit while the dino continues to build on itself
