so right now I am on the proces of cycle my new Nuvo 40 and I don't have any diatoms yet. But should I expect them or do some tank not get any diatoms? My tank seems to be cycling fast with dr tim ammonia along with bio Spria and live sand in 4 days I see nitrate but just like 20 ppm. I just don't know if I will get them or not thank for the help.

diatoms are your friend, really....................................

Every tank gets them sooner or later, it is always a matter of how much and if you can control them. I always prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
That's my plan I have been reading so much on diatoms and somethings I have read that everyone gets them at some point and other say not all so wasnt sure what to expect. And when they do come how long into the cycling process do they start to pop up?

I do understand every tank is different but wasn't sure if there is a rough idea.
It really depends on what you have in the tank and how often you are doing water changes. I suspect most see them between three and six months into a new tank. Just my experience. I would like to hear other opinions on this topic as I certainly do not have a ton of experience with this. Do I have some diatoms currently, yes. How old is my tank? will have to look but I think I am at the six month point.

I just set up a tank about 4 weeks ago, took roughly 2 weeks to cycle, and I'm just barely seeing diatoms. Nitrates have been steady around 7-10ppm and I'm still barely seeing small spots of diatoms. I still haven't even added any CUC other then 2 hermits and a nassarius snail. Just wait and you'll get at least some. Could take a while though.

Ok because I am seeing nitrates already starting to rise and it's only been 5 days my nitrites are off the charts and I have been dosing pure ammonia to a steady 2ppm. Just seems to me that it is cycling pretty fast with all the live sand, bio-Spria in the tank. I put no live rock just dry rock and I am just waiting for a diatom bloom

My tanks normally skip the nitrate cycle all together with live rock. Its the algae cycle that always gets me >.<

That's good I wanted to get some live rock but I don't see the point of spend 5 times the money yea it cycle a lot fast but j don't want hitch hikers

My tank is running the same right now. Used bio-spira and dry rock, dry sand. Cycled to 0 ammonia and 5-6 ppm nitrates after just 5 days. It's been 3 weeks now with no change. Still no diatoms and I'm prolly gonna throw a couple fish in tonight.

That's why I wanted to find out what other people say about diatoms during cycle just want to make sure the cycle is complete before I put again thing in the tank that could possibly harm the fish

I'm curious also. From everything I've read diatoms are inevitable and not harmful to the fish or corals and reading no ammonia and some nitrates is what your looking for. That's the first time I've cycled with dry rock and Bio-spira. I think that everything happened so fast is just throwing us off. I have 30 fish in a 300 gallon tub since this rebuild. I'm just gonna start adding them slowly and watch my levels and see how it goes. Starting with my least favorite fish just in case. lol

That's how I feel everything I have read says you will get diatoms but I have not seen a single brown spot anywhere so I kept on thinking that my tank is stand still for some reason but I will be watching your progress on add fish to see how your tank reacts to the new bioload I'm sure everything will be ok but will be following along keep me updated on how things go

2 weeks into Cycle of a new Reefer 170 (34g) using a brand new 6 stage BRS RO/DI reading 000 tds and some Aquaforest Salt, Started cycle with some Arag Alive sand, and have been dosing it daily with the Microbacter7 as directed. Saw tiny Diatom spots within the end of week one. Yesterday the "bloom" happened. The Wav pumps and upper rocks have a nice brown coat that my Certh snails are totally stoked about!

So about a week you saw diatoms?
