Cycling my new saltwater tank problem

I started my saltwater tank cycling on the 30th of october, I have put a piece of raw shrimp, & since this day my ammonia reading is around 0.25 ppm, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate. I have dosed nitrifying bacteria, but it seems that the situation is still the same. note that I have only dead rock & I was running on my skimmer, just turned it off few hours ago... any help?
Aquarium Info: 70 us gallons tank, skimmer, external filter, 10 us gallons sump, 2.5" dead sand bed, heater & I'm adjusting the temperature at 27c, & a powerhead
 
Section 5: The Cycle

In a freshwater aquarium you can add some flake food, wait a couple weeks, and then you can add fish. In the ocean there is much more involved than mechanical filtration. In fact, 70% of your aquariums filtration relies on the maturity of the live rock. A combination of bacteria, algae, and various invertebrates compose the “live” part of the rock. It takes quite a while to establish an ecosystem, even on a microscopic level. Without a proper understanding of the Marine Cycle, you will be in for a long term battle with parameters and algae. There are six main stages to a properly cycled tank. Follow this guide and you cannot mess up. You will need your basic test kit to test the progress.

Stage 1: Ammonia Cycle

Ammonia is the first thing that forms when something rots. It is a waste product in nearly all creatures as well. Instead of using a fish to start the cycle just use some food. Anything that is all natural and uncooked works just fine. Table shrimp that is uncooked works great. Drop it on the sand so it is in view. The shrimp should begin to rot within a couple hours or more. Let this shrimp rot until it is completely gone. If you are curious what your ammonia levels are, go ahead and take some tests. Keep track of the results as the shrimp rots. The smaller the food gets the more ammonia should be present in your water column and pretty soon should be off the charts. This will stay high for a while, but then start to drop. As soon as the ammonia starts to drop you will see a rise in Nitrite, you are now on the next stage.

Stage 2: Nitrite Cycle

Ammonia when broken down by bacteria becomes Nitrite, which is still a toxin. As your Nitrites rise your Ammonia will drop, drop, and keep dropping as long as you haven’t added any animals. Keep up with testing to observe your progress. Eventually your Ammonia will be very low and your nitrites will peak out until it starts feeding a different type of bacteria that turns it into Nitrates. Once your first signs of Nitrates are seen you are on the next stage.

Stage 3: Nitrate Cycle

Nitrates are removed within the live rock deep inside in all of the deep pours. This hidden bacteria consumes the nitrate and creates nitrogen gas as a byproduct. The nitrogen gas rises in the water column and escapes into the air. When one gas leave, another enters. Oxygen is then infused into the water. After the Nitrates start to dissipate your oxygen will increase and you will be ready for the intermission:

You are not done yet! You may have cultivated a nice crop of groovy bacteria and your water may be clean as can be, but, there are still 3 more stages to the cycle process before you can start your stocking. Take this time to consume all of which you have already done. The next 3 stages often put fear into the eyes of many newcomers. These are perfectly natural and are partially a representation of how the earth became an oxygen rich planet. Before there was any oxygen breathing organisms, there was the evolution of Cyanobacteria. This is a photosynthetic bacteria that creates Oxygen as a byproduct. There are several colors, but the commonality is that it is like a slime. The Cyanobacteria spread over a vast area and the atmosphere became oxygen rich like we breath today, without the smog. Cyanobacteria is responsible for life as we know it. The same applies to the reef. Now that your mind has been blown you may move on to the next stage of the cycle.

thanks for your share, it helped a lot. do you think I've a prob that after 8 days with a raw shrimp in the water & the ammonia levels are still 0.25?

fwiw ammonia test kits like the api are notorious for reading the lowest reading (.25ppm) when there is actually none present. My old 55g read that for 8 years with healthy thriving fish.

this is even more mind blowimg, how come having a piece of raw shrimp in the tank for 8 days with 0 ammonia?

I see you had dead rock. and did not mention a refugium with macros or other algae.
With plants life like algae the bacteria based nitrogen cycle is actually aided by the algae. The algae would actually prefer to consume ammonia over nitrates and therefore will "break up" the ammonia->nitrItes->Nitrates spikes. Sometimes and routinely you will be an initial nitrate spike from other organics in the system like rock and substrates.
But the bacteria still build up and starts consuming the ammonia so that after a few weeks the nitrates drop down also.

So if you have a good test kit, a rotting shrimp, and .25ppm (false) ammonia, I highly suspect you also have plant action from algae, macros or possibly even corals/clams and so on.

I have neither microalgae, nor macro... I also have a seachem ammonia alert that's giving me a reading of 0.05 ppm .. any explanations???
 
rotting shrimp takes a while to make any real ammonia. it has to rot, have you ever left raw shrimp out? it takes a while.

goto your local hardware store and buy a jug of 100% ammonia. costs about a buck. slowly dose up to 3ppm. I don't remember the exact dosing but it should be either 2 teaspoons or 2 tablespoons for your size tank. so dose 2 teaspoons and see where your at. it doesn't take much. once you've done that and gotten it up to 3ppm you can either drop in a piece of established live rock to provide the bacteria or use a quality bacteria additive like MB7 or Dr. tims one and only. wait a couple days and test, your ammonia should have dropped to below 1ppm, dose it back up to 3ppm. do this until you go from 3ppm to 0 within a 24 hour period then stop dosing ammonia and let the cycle finish.
 
I have been "reefing" for 30 years and I read these questions and then ask myself 50 others that I need to know before I can judge the right response. But to get back to the question, Either you have a bad test or your temp is low, but if you put a piece of raw shrimp in my 16 year old tank and it sits there it will spike my ammonia reading. If a fish just disappears And I cant find it after a few days I test the ammonia, if its up alittle that fish is in my tank somewhere and rotting. now I can find it and remove it. As I have learned that the initial cycle is not the only cycle your tank will ever go thru. As you change thinks around and add stock you will get diff readings on all your tests. What are the other tests showing, Nitrite, nitrate
 
Just reread your question again what does the piece of shrimp look like now, is it rotting into a little pile if goo or is it still a solid chunk

The other tests reading are 0 for nitrite, 0 for nitrate. I even used an API 5 in 1 test strips & it's giving me the same results... About the shrimp, if I'm judging correctly I guess it started to rott... I'll take pictures of it & show it to you so you can help me to judge the situation
 
A lot of info is already given, why your tank is still reading low on ammonia is not that difficult it just can happen.
That said it just takes you longer to go through the cycle process.
I used Dr Tim one and only for a few times now and I have helped some friends do the same, after 5 days the tank was cycled but if you drop down to much corals or to many fish in your tank your cycle can start all over again.
To many fish in a 70 gallon can be just one tang of 3".
Take your time even it will take you another month to get where you want to be as it will pay off.
Oh btw, years ago and I'm talking 25+ we peed in the tank as that's for 85.99% ammonia, not a whole lot but maybe 20ml.

so do you think it's normal for me to have 0.25 ppm ammonia till now? I'm fine with the fact that it might take longer, I'm simply afraid that I'm on the wrong track... what do you say if I intend to add some live rocks directly from the sea?

LR is always good but your rock that you have in your tank now is getting there.
By adding LR directly from the sea you running the change to add the pest as well.
IMO at this stage you just have to let I go and test often.
By next week you do a 20% WC and test again.
Keeping your skimmer off till you see diatoms is a smart thing to do, and leave the lights off too.
Let nature takes his way, and sometimes that takes time but will pay off in the long run.
