Part #6020.030 can be used on the 6040. Your cucumber must of been salmon-like to be able to fight that current and get in there.

Thanks, your answer is helpful I will check it out.
I think what happened is it crawled around the back and wrapped itself around the pumps inlet strainer above so found itself stuck on the pump which in fact could happen with many pumps come to that. Now maybe it was the inlet strainer that did he initial damage or indeed all he damage I can't be sure.

Ok, now we have figured out what to do we have other news............ the Solar Eclipse is still on schedule for Monday arrival, ETA depends on where or what position you are in and MACNA is next weekend, My name is Diesel and this news flash was free and save for all pumps ;)

:D Keep taking the tablets but double the dose:eek: ;)

Once in a while I find a pistol shrimp stuck to the side of the pump. The large flow concentrated to the small area makes for a lot of draw towards the intake grates, really not much one can do. If the bars were any closer together it would clog up way too fast.

I guess i took the original post more as a lighthearted way to mourn the loss of his sand sifting friend, and gentle warning to others. I didnt really see it as a serious accusation or placing blame, but more of a curiosity as to why this model was different from others.

You're right. What it doesn't make sense it's to throw the blames to other when the only one to blame is the cucumber owner. And in the middle of all this we have one dead cucumber...

Probably. If you allow me, take the opportunity to study more the cucumbers, because what's happened could have hurt more your tank.

I too have such a pump. And that knowing that pumps stopping on interval is a danger in the tank i adjusted it so its going at minimal speed instead of making a pause.
I have a few shrimps in the tank with no problems. I believe Your shrimps have molted and it is the rests you have found. It is easy to make a fool proof test. A dead shrimps smell. Molted rests dont.

If everyone knows that sea cucumbers and anemones are prone to get sliced by a pump's propeller, why would a company make a pump without some kind of cover over the propeller?

Maybe because the majority of people don't keep either. You could equally say why would an aquarist wanting either of those choose such a pump?

Any pump without protection could suck and kill a nem or cucumber.

Ture but then more dangerous to them without a guard

Not denying that and I'm sorry you've had issues. Just saying that there isn't really a "safe" internal pump, they all have their risks and cucumbers, nems et al, don't tend to come across many in the sea so haven't learnt to avoid them.

Saw this on a UK reefkeeping forum today.

A proppeller in a fish tank with no guard? I am very surprised by an excellent company with so little care for consequences. This would be a danger for new aquarists and shoul be corrected. Companies get sued all the time for defective products so yes Tunze bears responsibility for a very poor design for the unwary. If anyone thinks no cages is the way to go then take yours off.

Well, we appear to be in a minority along one or two more who have posted on my thread.

I don't think that its a matter of being unsympathetic but to blame the design and company is a bit much imo. If you don't like the design then choose something else. That might seem harsh but its not meant to be. For me to single out one company is hard as there are lots of pumps that I have seen and used with far larger gaps in their fish guards than the tunze has without it. I know for example someone who lost lots of wrasse through the side slits of a panta rhei and the above mp60 looks like its guard has larger holes as well.
The truth is that a nem or cucumber could succumb to the small side slits of any small pump and the fact that the tunze should be constantly moving, meaning its very hard for a fish or critter to go against the flow and kill itself (unless its a freak accident). If you turn the flow off for even a few seconds then you are asking for trouble. Do you think those clowns would have got anywhere near the propeller if the pump had been on? that's why I always check the pumps before turning them on. Its also got a cage but is useless, so does ecotech need a redesign.

Yes saw a similar situation on this forum with a decapitated clownfish... don't know where the thread went, the picture was quite graphic..

I think it may have been sucked into the intake openings. it would not be the first time I heard of that happening. Why I have no nems in my tank. I put blue filter sleeve around my Jebao pumps but it gets clogged to quickly.
