Recently had a tank crash , broke it down and sold most of the stuff from.my.57g. Im possibly looking to start another small 20g long salt tank with maybe some live rock and a clown or 2. Im wondering if this is possible with a HOB filter as a permanent setup. If so, what recommendations for brand of hob filter. Thanks!

Is it possible, I would say yes. You'll just have to be prepared and willing to clean the filter out likely once a week or so and get yourself on a regular water change schedule. That's my opinion anyway.

Yes , just have to find a good hob filter

Lot of things to do here. I suggest the 20 long. Oceanbox has a All-in-one conversion for the 20 long which is really cool.
Or they have a surface skimming conversion kit for the aquaclear hang on back filter.

If you were doing a hob filter only, get the aquaclear 70 and get this intank basket conversion for carbon or filter floss.

Aquamaxx hob-1 is a great skimmer for standard tanks also.

Cpr Hob, Ran the bak pak duel pac on my 72 fine but wanted to build and try my first sump so I switched out.
bakpak dual pak
bakpak2R+
bakpak2

There are more filter on the page you can also look at. I like the bakpak's for the reason they have a built protein skimmer.

Normally I would like this but I really hated the CPR bakpak. That was my first skimmer that I would have liked to throw out a 50 story building. Besides, it's not always best to keep the return pump inside the display tank.

There are some DIY videos on converting the hob filter for reef tanks. It would save you money.

You pretty much need the aquaclear. At least for long term. It's the easiest to clean and is tried and true for length of time. The intank media basket is only $50 and it will allow you to add several types of media. So for the aquaclear 70 and media basket you are looking at $100 +$20 for tank + $50 for jebao rw-4 + $30 heater. That is all you'll need besides RO/DI water and salt mix.

I actually have the tank, plenty of heaters, sand , just need jebao or hydor and aquaclear and media basket. The tank has two sides and back blacked out because i at one point used tank for QT but maybe ill just keep the sides and back black. Its got blue life aquarium.backround on it. But its just black instead of blue

Def need some rodi and salt though.

I'm always looking in craigslist for used aquaclears. Seems like nobody will give them up. Drives me crazy.

I been looking on craigslist for the innovative marine nuvo fusion setups. Cant find any at the moment. Like it cause of the all in one
Even if you found one used, they might knock off $10. You would still have to get a powerhead and heater in addition. Not to mention lights if you don't already have that.

Sold kessils unforutnately , but i have other led lights that i can use and do the job. Just not on the level of a kessil. We will see how this time.goes . Wish i had someone local i could get some established filter media or something from a sump so i can just start up.

You could always go to marine depot and buy a return nozzle and get some acrylic and silicone from the hardware store and do a DIY all-in-one. That alone would save a ton of money. You would still have to get a return pump. But it's cheaper than a pre-manufactured AIO and it would help with evaporation.

I have a 20 gallon nuvo fusion that I was gonna sell! Nobody wanted it at the time so I literally turned it into salt this week and I am planing on doing a coral only reef/frag tank so my big tank can have better fish... Even a canister filter would work but that is only if you take the time to clean it and change your water once a week. I have one on my main tank and it does really well in terms of filtration, even bacteria population...its dead silent too, which you cant get from a HOB....

I dont wanna sound dumb or anything, but I kinda wanna set my tank up the say way as the OP. I am starting up a 20 gallon high saltwater tank and I am kinda stuck on the filtration part how does the the AquaClear work?
