Dersa clam gapping

Unfortunately, they’ll never sustain themselves with supplemental feeding and it will only carry them for so long. If provided with adequate lighting, they can grow and survive without any feeding at all. That’s why lighting is the first crucial factor in keeping clams. Both of James Fatherree’s books are great and full of info. Mandatory reading for keeping clams.
What kind of luck have you had with Maxima? I should have 250-300 par now middle, at bottom of tank.

I currently have a maxima and noae that I’ve had for a few years. I lost my purple/gold maxima to a rogue yellow tang. In fact, my blue maxima is missing a large portion of its mantle, but is still going strong.

I have never had luck with maximas. The longest I kept one was 4 years, but it died due to a pyramid snail infestation brought in by another invert. Very frustrating. I have kept crocea for over 9 years (full 6" when I bought it). Currently I have a giga, squammie, derasa, hippopus, and many crocea. They do like light. I have always kept mine under MH and T5s. Have not checked par in years. :)

I find if they get injured, they die rapidly. PMD is slow. I had a squammie that took over a year of me treating it and such before it gave up. Very annoying. Pyramid snails will damage them, but keeping up with the infestation is key.

Here’s a pic during pyramid removal stage. I kept them in the sump in a raised container lit by a single Kessil 160. I initially had an a80 over them, but the noae kept squirting it, so I borrowed a friends 160, which allowed me to raise the light more. When I was using the a80, they were growing quite well.

The noae is considered extinct in the wild now so they have become expensive but still available farm raised. My current tank is 36x24x24 wish I had went 5 ft but had to keep wife happy. Plus all the electrical is mounted in separate cabinet. I like the derasa may try one again but once it gets to big will have to rehome it. I figure around 18 inches then to big. Not sure how long that could take as the one I had was growing pretty quick. I figure it will take 2-3 year or longer.

I saw some 2” croceas today at Vivid, not crazy cool bright colors, but nice. Might have to sell some frags and pick one up. There was one that had some nice highlights, turquoise-ish.
One has to have good rock for it to bore into and 350 plus par
