I pulled it as there was absolutely no movement from the clam even when I touched it..PMD isn’t usually a 12hr killer, in fact, clams that exhibit symptoms can live for some time. Also, there are signs of the onset and are quite noticeable. I’m not sure I would’ve pulled the clam, but I’m only basing that on the close up pic. Leathers do have a chemical defense, which would explain the clams condition after 12hrs of contact. If the leather was attached to a piece of rock, that could’ve caused some trauma as well.
Then I would assume there was damage to one or more internal organs when the leather fell on it. If the inhalant siphon was blocked or damage to the gills, stomach, etc… Either way, it sucks and sorry you lost the clam.I pulled it as there was absolutely no movement from the clam even when I touched it..
Yes it sucks. Don't like losing live stock. Especially such a nice clam. It does not bother me as much if a $10 sps frag does not make it but don't even like losing them. Then I would assume there was damage to one or more internal organs when the leather fell on it. I don't like losing pods when I have to throw away chaeto, so any loss is too much.Yes it sucks. Don't like losing live stock. Especially such a nice clam. It does not bother me as much if a $10 sps frag does not make it but don't even like losing them.
I lost my purple/gold maxima last year, but that was from a rogue yellow tang that developed a taste for tridacna. He got my blue maxima, but it's still going, even with part of it's mantle completely gone.So purchased the book, read the whole thing today. So he says it appears derasa is immune to PMD. I don't think it was the toadstool falling on it. I am not completely sure why but have an idea. I had been using phyto and reef-roids, and reef chili but nutrients were to high. Cut way back on feeding tank. The clam had been growing along with everything else. I do not think it was getting enough light without the feedings. I have almost doubled my light and everything seems to have adapted. i always had higher par on lps and softies than many people but i listened to wrong people who claim most are overlighting.I am going to try another derasa but eventually if it survives long term it will get to big for my tank. Maxima would be better size but they have lower success rate. What king of luck have you had with MaximaStable parameters and plenty of light. I feel like most clams would benefit from more full spectrum light. I think people assume that derasa are “low light” clams, but that simply isn’t the case. True, they can be found deeper than other clams, but they’re still getting a good amount of light. It’s kinda like how people consider soft corals low light, while some are found in deeper water, there are plenty found right next to acropora in very shallow waters.
In the meantime, I would buy James Fatherree’s book on clams. There’s a wealth of information in his book and that information is still very relevant today. I think too many people (especially new to the hobby) overlook books as a valid source of information. I still reference my books to this day.

Thanks for all the input
Good to hear even though he state in book derasa appear to be immune from pmd. But fresh water dip works for many other problems. He also says dersa should not be kept under 200 par. Maxima not less than 275 parMy book arrived 2. Didn’t get the read yet. Well my derasa had
What appeared to b symptoms of pmd and treated for it via freshwater dip and it worked
And the clam I have now seems happy from the process.
Well if you have enough food in tank they can survive at lower par but not optimal. As to pmd just repeating what the book says about dersa. But 30 minute dip in fresh water is the treatment for it. It is also treatment for some other pathogens that can cause similar appearance. Glad you clam is doing better.I guess I have 200 par lol. There are
Articles illustrating derasa clams w pmd and fw treatment.
Unfortunately, they’ll never sustain themselves with supplemental feeding and it will only carry them for so long. If provided with adequate lighting, they can grow and survive without any feeding at all. That’s why lighting is the first crucial factor in keeping clams. Both of James Fatherree’s books are great and full of info. Mandatory reading for keeping clams.Well if you have enough food in tank they can survive at lower par but not optimal. That is why I stated not optimal. As James stated no mater what you hear unless tank is to new or has no inhabitants that get fed you don't need supplemental feeding for clams. In a normal mature systems there is enough food. A clam needs light as it can get all of its needs from light.Unfortunately, they’ll never sustain themselves with supplemental feeding and it will only carry them for so long.
