hey I just made a Batch of new rodi water and went to check my top off bucket and the water smells like a foul fishy / like the DI cartridge did when it was new what's up is this ok there shouldn't be an odor should there? There wasn't about a month ago when I replaced all of my filters is my DI cartridge bad all ready????

What kind of shape is your carbon block in? I am definitely not the best qualified to answer this but it may be a start. If the carbon block is in bad shape or clogged or something you will not get good carbon filtration which should be reducing or eliminating any odor-causing compounds.

Stupid question, but was the bucket clean before you filled it?

Does the raw water (i.e. out of your hose/faucet) smell the same? How about the waste water out of the RODI unit?

Do you have color-change DI resin?

Was there standing water kept in the filter unit for a long time? How long ago did you last use the unit?

Jay's questions are good ones.

Sometimes DI water (and anion DI resin) can have a fishy smell. If that's the source - not an issue to worry about.

All filters are new sediment filter is still white carbon block filter is new all filters only one month old

Bucket was clean / kept clean washed after each use

Raw water is clean no smell waste water smells like water clean no smell

Yea it is a color changing spectrapure DI cartridge

RO unit is used every other to ever third day and ran for 20min before water is kept!

Thanks for your responses thus far guys!

personally I would just make a new batch of water, if you have a bad feeling start over, i would not take any chances!! usually gut instincts when it comes to aquariums are right!!

if it smells fishy, It is FISHY!!!

That is normal.
Type 1 Strong based Anion resins release very low levels of amines (trimethylamine). A very low threshold of 5 PPB or greater will cause a fishy odor to be noticeable. The odor is most noticeable when the resins are new and when they are at or near the point of exhaustion.
NOTE: Trimethylamine is also released by decomposing fish which also results in the same type of odor.

i noticed i would get a weird smell from my RO DI water if i left the lid on tight on my garbage can. I always have a pump circulating the water but i think leaving a lid on the can made it stale. regardless, now i leave the lid partially on (to keep dust out) and now it no longer smells funny.

I never aerate RO/DI water until I am ready to do a large water change, it keeps better if it is not aerated since you are adding contaminants from the air when you do. For mixed saltwater I only keep it around for a few days as I have found it gets pretty rank after a week or so even when aereated.

After getting a more artificial or chemical smell yesterday I called air water ice who supplied my system. He told me that my Rodi water expires after 1 to 2 days and starts absorbing ambient elements.

How does everyone maintain their Rodi water? Do you just make before water changes or do you maintain a reservoir? How do you handle top off?

I keep RO/DI water for months and months with no issues. It needs to be capped or sealed or it will start attracting everything it can to get back to its natural "dirty" state.

Smells are also common with both brand new and especially old, exhausted DI resins. What are you storing the water in, is it covered or sealed in any way? How old is your DI and what are your tap, RO only and RO/DI TDS readings?

Now I'm curious about this as well. I store my water for weeks at a time. I use a trash can to store it that is rated food grade. I keep a lose fitting lid on to keep out dust and such. I do have it heated and a circulation pump in there. Should I be doing something different

I would not heat, cool or circulate/aerate the stored RO/DI water if it is for top off. If you use some for water changes I would mix my salt, aerate and heat or cool just before use. Circulating the water draws in contaminants .

I keep it in a brute food grade trash can, 6 months old. I changed DI resin and have a new first stage and have run a batch of water. I brought it up to my mixing containers and it has no smell whatsoever. He recommended washing the storage container with bleach and rinsing.

I've never gone more than 2 weeks water storage with the lid locked on, temp70 degrees.

I'm not sure I agree with him, I have to do some research. TDS tonight 0
