DI WATER SMELLS HELP? Please!!

I would not heat, cool or circulate/aerate the stored RO/DI water if it is for top off. If you use some for water changes I would mix my salt, aerate and heat or cool just before use. Circulating the water draws in contaminants .
That's exactly what I do. The new batch with new Rodi resin has no scent once transferred from the storage container which is identical to the mixing container. Storage container still has a smell

If it smells musty or like cat pee just be sure to add a powerhead.
I've reworked my setup in the last 6 months. Now I keep the fresh DI water heated, and a pump with a hose, with the hose output above the water. So it doesn't splash, but it does suck the surface down into the water. It's always at temp to make emergency water if I need it and since it's heated, it'll just create a mini freshwater environment.

So how long can you keep 70 degree Rodi water in a sealed container?

I got my rodi unit a little while ago and brand new out of the box mine has that same smell you described. Have made at least 100g with it and still has the same musky smell. I keep it in a 30 gallon barrel.

I keep RO/DI for months. Nothing will go bad with it. I would not worry about musty smells. Might not even be the water but some mildew growing above it in the container.

Hello,
My empty containers have that smell and that has me worried. Should you clean these containers or flush them out periodically?
Thanks, Larry

Would you use any solution or maybe add vinegar to clean and get rid of smell? I use Clorox to clean filter socks only a very small amount, that would definitely kill any bad stuff and get rid of funky smell but would it cause any issues?

I used to clean my rodi bucket every few fills, but since adding the pump/heat, it doesn't get musty anymore..
Vinegar works great though to clean off any films or smell, though it might take a few rinses/scrubs.

Mine is in my garage in Phoenix but I did finally install an insulated garage door so it is a little more bearable. This weekend when it was 119 outside the garage was probably only 90!

I feel Ya Desert Rat We are sweltering here in FL. I get a brown film in my top off can. Water still tests 0 or very close. I haven't scrubbed it in months.

Great thread - informative! We smell the same thing when pumping top-off water out of the storage vat for rinsing / cleaning things. We thought that it might possibly be coming from the plumbing of the mixing station, but now we have a different possibility to investigate.

Research DI resins and amines. Other things that cause noticeable odors at extremely low levels are water disinfected with chlorine dioxide when it reacts with new carpets and carpet glues and many forms of blue green algae like Geosmin and MIB, often when lakes or reservoirs turn over with temperature changes, down in the parts per billion they are so pungent.
