Diagnosis needed for golden-brown (possible bacteria)

I'd recommend to get access to a microscope or maybe ask in your local forum if someone has one and could look at the sample before you mess with the balance of your system or take some other drastic steps that might not even work.
"Know your enemy" should be the credo when dealing with these things.
 
One more thing - and I said this before: turn off all flow in the tank (during the lighting period) and watch for the next 10-15 minutes. If the dust partially rises from the ground an inch or half an inch (looks like it slowly dissolves into the water), then it's dinoflagellates.

Randy looked at the pictures and said that those were not dinoflagellates? I doubt that & if you post a link in his reef chemistry forum with a link here I'm sure he would weigh in. There are about 1.500 species, not all are snotty, some are up to 2mm large and some even glow in the dark.

As I said before: for 100% certainty you'd need a microscope, but the tests I proposed are tried and make use of the fact that dinoflagellates are mobile and will tend to swim towards the light in stagnant water (and also that some are so large they are visible with bare eyes).
 
Was this ever identified? I'm pretty sure I'm suffering with the same stuff. Chemiclean doesn't work, blackouts don't work, dino-x doesn't work....I'm at a loss. Disappears at night, blows off the sand and rocks but develops again within the hour if the lights are on.
 
I have the same thing as well. Been going on since April. I'm not sure if it is my bulbs but they are only 9 months old so I ordered new ones to install this weekend. I tried Red Slime Remover and it didn't even touch/phase it. Since it isn't hurting anything and it is just an eye sore for me I'm just riding it out. My phosphates are .00 to .01 (Hanna ULR) and my nitrates are zero. When I saw this thread I was hoping someone had resolved it but I guess not.
 
Trying to resolve it caused a mini tank crash (all snails and fish belly up). However - in the re-stocking and nutrient control/export came my solution. I measured silicates and there were some in the water, not huge amounts, but enough to give a reading on the test kit. 0.1ppm. As silicate is directly tied to phosphate and my po4 was almost 0 I decided to shove some rowaphos (double the recommended dose for me, worked almost in week) in my filter. It tried to fight back and it still has a very minor presence in the tank - but it's for the most part under control. I'm happy with my tank again, my water is pristine and I've gradually added new livestock and all are doing really well - one thing I noticed, my sand sifting goby wouldn't touch the sand with this stuff on - blow it off gently with a turkey baster and he goes to work and I think being able to encourage him to keep busy with the sand has been the clincher in getting rid of this 'whatever the hell it is'. After a long chat at my LFS we've concluded that it MUST be a rare type of dino because to this day any turbo snail I introduce to the tank is dead within 48 hours - and only certain types of dino (not stringy or with air bubbles in this case) are toxic to specific species of snails. My nassarius are all fine, trochus doing well....it's just turbos. Anyway - I think I beat it. Try the silicate remover, run carbon sponge or activated carbon, keep nutrients low and make sure your whites aren't on for more than 4 hours with 2 hours blue either end. (mine were actually on for nearly double that and must have had an impact as this stuff is photosynthetic)
