Diamond Goby...making water cloudy...was this a mistake...???

...so I picked up a Diamond Goby yesterday and this thing has not stopped sifting sand...although, I appreciate it's efforts, the water is not as clear because of the sand it is spitting out...I have 105 gallon reef...was this a mistake?...will it settle down?...what is your experience with these fish...??? :neutral:

It will settle in about a week at the most, no worries its doing its job. Lol

Lol...thanks FL_Reefer...it is one busy fish. It has turned over the entire top level of sand very quickly and in a methodical manner...very efficient !!!

It also depends on what kind of sand you are using, my tank never really cleared up since the fine sand just kept blowing everywhere (goby and lots of flow makes it worse). I had to use 100 micron filter bags to help with the sand storm and it cleared up a bit, but still cloudy'ish. When I upgraded to a larger tank I used caribsea special grade sand and never had this issue. HTH

...yah, my sand is the fine Caribsea sand...it looks like smoke clouds when the fish sifts through it :squigglemouth:

It will get better once the finer dust particles gets filtered out, however, it's not going to be like it was before the goby. My goby would scoop sand, swim a few inches up, then just lets all the sand fly everywhere, boy was it messy. LOL. I was gonna get rid of my DW goby due to sandstorm (3 months later), but he got lucky when I upgraded tank, and got the right sand this time Good luck!!

....hmmm, I can't decide weather or not to keep it or trade it in...it's so cool to watch, but I like my water clear...just makes tank look dirty :squigglemouth:

I bought a diamond back goby last week, acclimated it and took it out of the bag and it spiraled right to the bottom, dead that evening...

It's strange that fresh water have a 3 day guarantee and those ar cheap fish...why is it we spend an arm and a leg for salt water and there is no guarantee...sad
I know it has a lot to do with the sensitivity of the fish and our water parameters

If you use a filter sock, eventually all the fine stuff will work its way out of the tank.
Watch the base of your rock work as well. Mine likes to work around and under the edges of things.
Over time, they will undermine the support around the edges, could cause things to shift around.

Don't worry it will clear. I had the same problem in my tank. With in a week it was as clear as can be. He has been in two of my tanks. When I upgraded to my larger tank I used fine black sand. The first few daywere bad. I could barely see in the tank. Now it's perfect. I wouldn't take him out the do a great job cleaning the sand

I cannot stand a cloudy tank, i would just get rid of him, there are other animals that will clean your sand with out the water looking milky.

Thanks guys...I think I am going to stick it out...the consensus on this forum and the LFS is that it will settle and the water will become clear again...I really enjoy watching the fish work and the interaction it has with my clown...pretty funny !!!

Diamond Gobies are Fun to watch!! We've had ours for 4 Years! He's a pain sometimes with his burrying the Chalices on the Sand Bed.. But we wouldn't trade him in, their Great Cleaners!!

...well just an update on the Goby...the tank has settled...he is still hard at work turning the sand over, but the cloudiness is gone...I'm not quite sure why, because he hasn't stopped. Love how there is no algae anywhere on the sand...this fish has done a fantastic job raking the sand for me ...nothing like free labor !!!

I am not a fan of my diamond goby he tears up my tank sand everywhere always covering up my beautiful chalices with sand. he must know it makes me so mad everyday i come home and 4-5 corals are covered in sand. I had to go out buy more rock and put all my frags that were on the sand up on rocks :frusty:

Haha, He mine Only covers the Rainbow Chalice!! He knows it was expensive and trys to hide it from me. He can be a pain but he keeps the sand spotless so I put up with him.

That's why I love my Rainford Goby. Spends the whole day sifting without making a mess, and I have that sugar fine sand in my tank that gets easily blown around. I never have to dig out any corals and no mounds. Diamond Goby are the Oscar Madison's and the Rainford are the Felix Unger's of the fish world.
