Dinos

We can get you an ID if you can post a video. Treatment is very dependent on which strain you have. Blackouts can cause cyst formation and never are a permanent fix. Dont let your NO3 fall below 5 and keep your PO4 above 0.06!

Mine is .02

Glad you had progress on the main tank, thats a relief. If you dont get any answers here, there is this facebook group, the mods there are very helpful "Mack's reef...Dinoflagellates support group"

I'm pretty sure one of them is posting in this thread. Jason definitely knows his stuff concerning dinos

This could be a long road, sorry for that.
Check the genus of dinos you have. A 500x microscope solves that.
Blackout helps for some but hardly solves.
Check Cruz Arias method.
If you discover Ostreopsis go to the UV route...

There aren't any dinos in the higher magnification pictures Jilly. I agree the 40x picture appears to be amphidinium. This is unfortunately not an easy one to get rid of. Doesn't respond to UV at all. Dosing silicates to cause a competing diatom bloom and H2O2 dosing (info is in the Facebook group you joined earlier tonight) are the best bets. Be prepared to be patient. Getting rid of amphidinium is rarely a quick task. The good news is they are not toxic and corals and inverts rarely show any signs of distress from them.

Might I add raising nutrients? Should work for any genus, correct?

I followed the elegance corals routine when i first had dinos. They just came back now, but ive had 0 phos for months so was expecting it. Planning to just raise nutrients as an initial step, and siphon the dinos into a filter sock to reduce the numbers. No microscope but mine dont reduce at night, so they dont seem to be waterbound.

I've been dealing with dinos the past couple weeks and I'm wondering how long can I shut the lights off without the corals being affected? Will this kill the dinos or will they just come back?
I blacked out for 3 days and lost one of my SPS sticks. I hope you fare better. Good luck, dino is so frustrating.
