Discouraged

I GUESS YOU DIDNT DO YOUR RESEARCH.

some people get over the diatom stage earlier or later down the road, but its the first stage that everyone goes through. It will we over soon.

This is a hobby that you cant just blindly go into... or you will have a BAD time. haha. Oh yeah... dont be discouraged when you go through corals dying and fishes dying. Its all a learning experience.

you can have fishes die because they jump out of the tank, get stuck in pumps/drain holes, sickness, etc. You will then learn to get a lid and not forget to put it back on after feeding; plug the drain holes if smaller fish gets stuck and kill themselves; not buy cheap fish from cheap lfs stores thinking your getting a deal, etc.
Actually I've done a lot of research. Just looking at people's pictures that had their tanks for only 1 month and they're fully stocked and look perfect. That's why I felt discouraged.

Don't worry yourself over other aquariums, nobody likes to share a bad photo of ugly stage in aquriam's but majority have been through this, your very close to the end goal of what you set out to achieve and we look forward to seeing how your aquarium comes along.
Start looking into what life you would like, I spent most of my time during this phase at what I am going to add, just shopping and researching. Your setup and aquarium look amazing and I'm sure your going to have the best success :) :)
Thank you so much.

Thank you!!! It's been like 4 and a half now but yeah. I appreciate all the help.

I don't know if they will fit but photos to show you my aquarium from April/may last year.... until now... Definitely worth the time and effort, it's not the kind of aquriam you see many pictures of but I love it and enjoy it :)

Please do not feel discouraged and do please continue to 'stick it out'. The rewards are amazing

(I should start a thread lol)

Big difference for sure!!!! My sand finally cleared up so that gives me hope lol

Actually I've done a lot of research. Just looking at people's pictures that had their tanks for only 1 month and they're fully stocked and look perfect. That's why I felt discouraged.
Ignore that person. Some people don't know how to be constructive and encouraging without also being... like that.

My tank is only 8 months and it literally took until last month to really get into a groove and past the uglies. Before that I'd see other peoples tanks and get a little discouraged too! But keep pushing through and before you know it you'll look back at this and go "What was I so worried about?". And we'll all be cheering with ya!

Tha k you. That means a lot! I am really excited to see what it'll look like in a year or so, I haven't bought any corals yet either because I want my tank to be 100 percent coral ready and stable.

I get that for sure! I will say that getting some hardy corals (soties/LPS/Zoas) at this point isn't a bad idea honestly. I added after almost immediately after cycling the tank and I've only lost an lord (had a mineral defecincy due to me having to leave for a few weeks and wasn't able to get a water change in) and a zoa to cyano.

You're tank will never be "perfect", if that makes sense. Stability will only come once you are done adding livestock. So if your nutrients are stable then add one or two coral and see how they do! Once the tank goes back to a constant nutrient and/or mineral level add more! Also by having a few corals you might feel better about the tanks progress as well! But I definitely get wanting to be comfortable as well.

Every time I add something new to the tank I'm super anxious that my tank isn't ready for it haha. I add my first BTA tomorrow and I'm definitely nervous! How a new inhabitant will do is always a bit of an unknown. But each time I add something and it lives, and then thrives, I get a bit more confident! I'm sure the same will apply to you :)

Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it. And yeah I think I might add a GSP to grown up on the back glass of the tank.

GSP is always a good one! It's my GFs favorite coral haha. Another great starter is a Duncan or Candy cane (trumpet) coral! Both very hardy. I love my duncan.

The secret there is they are probly very experienced and using old rock or new live rock from the ocean. My tank pretty much suffered for the first year then growth exploded , your tank looks great it’s part of the natural algae cycle. And surprisingly I didn’t want to take pics
Of it during that time lol

This is so true - you don’t see it because people aren’t proud of the ugly phase. You only see nice new tanks when they are the anomaly. I agree to stick it out! It is worth it and in a few months when everything settles you are you going to feel like a rockstar! Then you’ll make mistakes and feel awful again, if you’re like me, but still worth it. I’ve learned a lot from other people’s mistakes on here but, sadly, more from my own. Biggest mistake would be throwing in the towel too soon and I personally think being overly worried causes folks to mess with the parameters trying to fix it but messing with parameters often causes the problem. Good luck and hang in there!

Just popping by to jump on the stick it out train! I have a tank I started with all dead rock and sand at the one month mark(ish). I'm anxiously waiting for my uglies to kick into full gear so I can get them out of the way.

Yeah.... I just look at others people's tanks after like a month and they already look so good. I'm taking care of it and you don't think 3 months is a long time?
If you have an awful lot of unused (i.e. not covered by living things) - surface area - you will get things to grow. Most people do not have the money to fill up their tank with large colonies, etc.

In the meantime - don't despair - buy some things to cover the bare area. Part of the issue you're noting is that you have a lot of bare space to allow for coral growth (which is good) - but that takes time. :)

People that say 'I guess you didn't do you own research - IMHO - are practically worthless'. Why? Because many people that did their own research have also messed up

This tank is a little over 3 months old. I am really discouraged. Looks ugly. I am doing 10 percent water change, change out the filter sock every 4 or so days, vaccuum my sand and still I have this **** in my tank. Everyone's looks so beautiful and here's mine.

Patience. Your just getting started. Get some trochus snails and a pod population established. The algea is normal at this stage. Maintain wster quality . It will be pretty soon. Most beautiful tanks here aren't new. They've passed the ugly stage you're in now. Good luck!
