Dkh over 24 even after vinegar and water changes

if can get your hands on some you can lower the alkalinity with sea chem acid buffer. To do this safely without adding huge amounts of co2 to your tank. Make your water change water and add the buffer to this, keep a power head going. This turns bicarbonate into co2. Use a dilution calculator to determine your desired step one goal, id shoot for 12-13 dkh(high but near normal range) Test your water change water dkh to make sure the buffer math matches reality.

You can add the buffer directly into the aquarium, but needs to be done slowly over the course of many hours. Why i would not suggest this route.

Vinegar will not effect alkalinity, would need a strong acid like muriatic acid not a weak one like acetic.
 
Happy to report down to 15.5 as of today, duncan survived chalice not completely burned, purple ricordea rebounding, zoas just beginning to open although at half the population they were at.

I've always gone the DIY route when it comes to virtually everything when I can. Alkalinity is no different.

Speaking of alkalinity, I make my own alkalinity solution. It's easy and very affordable. I use plan old Arm and Hammer baking soda, unsented. (sodium bicarbonate)

I use a clean gallon jug, fill it with RO/DI water and add 1 1/8 cup of baking soda. Mix it till all of the baking soda is dissolved. Using this calculator:


Selecting "Randy's recipe 2, alkalinity part". Follow the instructions to dose.

Never raise alkalinity (dkh) more than 1 dkh in a day's time and you won't shock your live stock. 8-9 dkh is a good range to stay in.

Obviously you don't need to do that now! But down the road when you need a little bump in alkalinity, it's a tried and true method.

Thanks for that, would that be better than Kalkwasser? Or would I also need to dose calcium?
