Do fish sleep and why are they always hungry?

I have a blue tang, a yellow tang, two clowns. Every day they see me and almost jump out of the tank to get food. The clowns are constantly hungry no matter how much i feed them and he tangs just keeps on eating his sea weed. They poop so much. Especially the tang. Am i over feeding them? They get flakes for breakfast, frozen brine shrimp for lunch and marine S for dinner. The tang gets the 1 x 1 inches pieces of sea weed 3 times a day.

Question2. After 15 mins of the lights going off the fish seem like they are dead. The blue tang wedges himself between these rocks and stops moving until the lights go on. The clowns also look dead. One just floats upsode down and lets the current take him wherver it blows. The other jist lies on the sand. Will myvcrans think they are dead and eat them one day?
 
Feed mysis shrimp.
That’s not much food. Tangs eat a lot of meat too, not just algae.
The sleeping sounds kind of normal.
 
I would feed higher quality food then flakes and brine shrimp. Sounds like they are not getting enough.

I feed my fish LRS, mysis, clam, live worms, masstick (with selcon) the most but I also have spirulina brine, calanus, ova, and a few other mixed varieties.

Fish are not like us...they dont eat 2-3 times a day....in the ocean if they are not sleeping they are basically always looking for food and eating and will stuff themselves if given the chance. They have different digestive tracts and metabolism.

Things that would think a fish is dead don't do that visually as much as by smell or such. I don't know how to explain it but a bristle worm or nass snail doesn't know a fish is dead or dying by it floating around.
 
Most do sleep whereas they hide and are listless until lights go on. As for food, in the wild, a high percentile of fish spend the whole day grazing mainly angels and tangs while others have a constant food supply of plankton and crustaceans

Thanks guys. I jist orderd mysis shrimp on azon to add to the food supply. But but it looks like the shrimp are too big for the fishes mouth.

Get a cheap 'drink mixer' style blender. Get a 7-11 slurpee cup. You now have a mysis shrimp processing station. Chop until fine, feed a tenth of what you think the fish will eat twice as often. This is the recipe for happy fish.
 
Wont that be too much food? I afraid of poLluting the tank.

Fish need to be healthy and to be healthy they need a healthy diet and enough food.

If your filtration can't keep up then you need better filtration or bigger water changes or less fish.

The cubed PE mysis are small. Otherwise you can chop up larger foods.

Feed frozen not freeze dried.

What? Even nano fish can eat mysis. And you did not order the correct stuff if you got it on amazon.

Look up frozen PE Mysis thats what you want. Frozen and not freeze dried.
 
Amazon is not a place to buy your fish food. Go to the local fish stores and see what they carry. Even Petsmart and Petco carry frozen foods. Feed frozen at least once or twice a day. Ditch the flakes. Brine has little to no protein or vitamins.

For instance, I mix up the following items in one container. Hakari Mysis, Rods herbivore, LRS fish frenzy, Marine cuisine, Hakari Coral gumbo, and Hakari rotifiers. I also add some vitamins to the mix. I let it thaw and mix it all together. Then I will refreeze it flattened out in gallon ziplock bags. I then take a quarter of a bag and thaw it at a time. This is what I feed my fish twice a day. The other feeding they get Pellets that are a mix too. Also I add Nori in there when ever I feel like the tangs are doing a good job eating Algae.

But, it's all a process. You need to find the balance that your fish are happy. I can assure you everyone has thier own formula and there are thousands of ways to success. So what if your tank gets a little dirty. Add a clean up crew to help.

my clown used to lay on the sand bed at night.. lol, thought I was the only one with a weirdo fish ;Hilarious
 
We don't recommend thawing and refreezing. When you refreeze the food there is a "shearing" effect at the cellular as the ice crystals form which degrades the food. It's bad enough that it happens during our manufacturing but to do it 2-3 more times seems unnecessary if it can be avoided. I appreciate you using LRS foods!
FYI, it looks like the folks (ok, Larry) at LRS don't recommend refreezing their product.
 
I don't see what the fuss is about here. The OP has a tank full of fish lively and happy to see him, what is wrong with that? I mean, the food advice everyone is giving him is fine, but my healthy fish are like my healthy dogs, always looking for a treat even after being fed.

Regarding the sleeping, my Ocellaris clown sleeps sucked onto my powerhead, luckily I have an anemone guard on it. First time I saw it I thought for sure he was dead and the current sucked him in, but no, he is just fine. Fish are weird.
 
IMO - you are feeding to much. There is nothing like satiation for fish more than for a very short time. All all carnivorous and omnivorous fish are designed to eat as as much as possible when there is adequate food - it will maybe not be around all the time. Because that they never know when food will be present again - they are designed eat and to store nutrients reserves just for bad times - eat and store as much as possible when it is possible is the melody. They store it as fat and in also as proteins (if they exercise enough - read swim a lot in strong currents). This reserves is meant to be used rather fast (in temperate species - within a year) - for tropical and subtropical species it will be used in even shorter period of time or for constant breeding.

Many omnivorous fish (and some predatory species too) feed on low nutrient prey - it means they have to eat very often in order to get the nutrient they need

For mostly herbivorous species - there is another problem they have to solve - the food itself is very nutrient rich but the nutrients is protected by cellulose walls. Cellulose is a compound that is very difficult to digest - especially for fish that all seems to lack the enzyme Cellulase. They try to solve this through a very long digestive track - very much longer than the length of the digestive track of carnivorous and omnivorous fish. with a good population of bacteria (some can produce cellulase) and time - at least a part of the nutrients will be available for the fish but most of it will only be pretreated and come out as very much poop. However this poop is a very good food sources for other organism as shrimp, hermits and other detritus eating animals because much of the breakdown process of the cellulose walls is already been done by the fish.

This means that carnivorous and omnivorous fish eat and eat if food is available. If they in nature feed on low nutrient prey - they eat all the time they could too. If they eat too much (or too nutrient rich) food they build up reserves (read fat) and if they get food all the time (or too nutrient rich food) and not get periods there they use the reserves - they get problem. They get to large and often malformed

For mostly herbivorous species - there is another problem too. The long digestive tract is designed for process indigestible food and at least get out some nutrients. They are also designed to eat all the time because they maybe need up to 8 times more raw-food than carnivorous and omnivorous species in order to extract the same amount nutrients for their growth.

If it will be bad to give our carnivorous and omnivorous fish to much, to often and to nutrient rich food - it will be a disaster to give mostly herbivorous species the same. Diseases caused by hexamite like organisms is more common than you can believe among herbivorous species and caused by too digestible food (for the digestive system)

Someone says - but look at fish farms - they use this type of high quality digestive food without problems.

That´s right and the fish farm industry is very good in produce food there the meat production will be optimized and because of the genetics of fish you can just push highly digestive predatory food through the short digestive tract of carnivorous and omnivorous fish and get a 1 kg fish after 1/10 of the time it takes in the nature. but the lifespan of farmed fish is normally not longer than 2 years - after that its time for us to eat them.

But our fish - they should not live for 1 or 2 years - they should live for many more years.

I do not say that´s wrong to feed with highly digestive dry food but do not feed too much and be very careful with fish that are mostly herbivorous. If you ask the fish - they are like children with that exception that children can eat how much candy you give them instead of food.

A yellow tang seems to be between 8 and 10 years old when it is around 150 mm total length (from snout to end of caudal fin) in nature. Length depends on sexes. A female stop around 150 mm and a male around 170 mm. They can be up to 40 years in nature but most growth is the first 10 years. See here In that article - it is a very good chart of yearly grow rate in nature . in short - 0-1 year around 32 mm - 1-2 year around 25 mm, 2-3 year around 18 mm, 3-4 year around 14 mm, 4-5 year 11 mm, 5-6 year 8 mm and so on. It means that a 100 mm yellow tang (10 cm) is around 5 years old and if it is in your aquarium it should grow 8 mm the following year if it was in nature

I hope this answer some of your concerns and questions. But if it works for you - do as you do but hopefully will my post give some new ways of approaching the question.

My Valentini puffer wedges himself straight up and down in the corner of my tank most nights. As for food. I use San Francisco Bay brand Marine Cuisine that I get at Petsmart and they have it at most Petcos. My fish go crazy for it and in the mornings I mix in some seaweed pellets and a couple times a week I throw in a froze mussel so the crabs can get something extra and most of fish enjoy it as well.

Agree.

So...I'm not sure anything is wrong or requires any action. Fish are always interested in food, tangs poop a lot and yes, they sleep in odd positions. You can modify quality or quantity of food. We all make adjustments as time goes on as our budget, knowledge and tanks require.

The advice here is solid, but if they look healthy and active and your tank parameters are good enjoy the fish.
 
Do fish sleep? They certainly do. I scuba dive. On a night dive, you get to witness, the changing of the guard. Most fish are diurnal. They are active during the day and sleep at night. Fish will seek out places to hide and go to sleep at night. Parrot fish secrete mucus coverings for when they sleep. A diver needs to be careful not to shine a bright light on a fish. A fish can wake up and leave its sanctuary making it vulnerable.

At night, the crustaceans: crabs, shrimp, lobster etc, come out and are impressively active.
