Do most anthias die from uronema or starvation?

I am starting to believe that most anthias are dying from uronema.

If anyone has recently lost an anthias, did you see red sores on it?

In the past before I was observant with fish diseases, I would lose new anthias within 1-2 weeks. It never made sense because they were eating at least twice a day.

Even if they would slowly lose weight, I don’t think it would happen within 2 weeks. It should take much much longer.

And I’m thinking this is true because I purchased a group of anthias twice last year in QT. Fed multiple times a day, but they developed the red sores within that week.


I will assume that uronema kills anthias more commonly than starvation.

I can agree with this - When I was in my LFS and working there, we lost multiple anthias and Eventhough they were fed 3-4 sometimes even 5 times a day every day, they still died off. And yes we did see red sores on them.

So yes I do believe that Uronema could quite possibly be the more common death over Starvation.

Agreed. My LFS gets anthias frequently and they almost always develop uronema.

Chromis and anthias are very prone. Unfortunately, uronema is becoming more and more resistant to treatment. All treatments are hit or miss with uronema.

Mixing formalin and metronidazole doesn’t even work consistently. Some people are experimenting with formalin, metro, and tea tree oil (based on a study) and there’s promising results, but ready to becoming an official treatment yet. Some fish (wrasses) are reacting bad to it and more testing is needed. It’s working on chromis though!

Likewise on the uronema. I've bought a harem of lyretails and sunburst anthias over the past year. I know I have uronema in my tank (blue/green chromis lived through it). I feed them heavy, they never make it. They are as elusive to me as a copperband, my total achilles heel fish.

Btw, both sets survived 30 days of QT @ LFS, they die off within a month once I get them home.

Wow. This is very unexpected to me. I was under the impression that established fish rarely ever get uronema. Thank you for telling me this.

It sucks, the sunburst was a special order for me. Had a male & three females. Slow drip acclimation and put them in at lights out. One female dead next day, and then the male and two females lasted between 21-35 days. Male was the last to go. Weird deaths too, sudden red rash like spots (typical of uronema) and dead within 24 hours. I was feeding metro/kanaplex/focus once a day in thawed mysis (which they ate) and still lost them.

The 1st batch of anthias, the lyretails, I lost all of them within 14 days. Same thing as above, medicated frozen at least once a day, same sudden deaths.

Many ways to do it. In the past I’ve done copper 14 days with metronidazole and prazi.

For the future fish I’m adding I’m probably going to keep copper for 14-20 days. Metronidazole. Plus 3 doses of prazipro (using 2 doses does not work for flukes IMO)

For uronema prone fish I will probably decide to use formalin baths, metro dosing, and tank transfers. That will also take care of ich and velvet if I do the transfers more frequently.

If this is for me, my LFS that I buy qt'ed/conditioned fish does not use copper on wrasses & anthias. IIRC they go with observation & a few rounds of general cure + 14 days of dosing paraguard. If they see anything over the 30 day holding period, they won't sell, I get refunded (or can wait for specific treatment) and will treat the fish accordingly.

The sunburst stung the wallet... After that loss, I decided to take a break from trying again...

I don't even acclimate more than temp acclimation.
In the tank it goes. I live life on the edge lol.

I wonder if they pick up uronema at the LFS then it slowly kills them, possibly the stress of shipping could help it by stressing them and a stressed fish is often a weak fish. Just a thought.
