We were trying to think of names for our Purple Fire Fish (now known as Violet) and our YWG and it got me to thinking if people name their fish?

Frankly I really don't know, I always just assumed they were like dogs or cats, you name them. So what do you guys do?

I name some of them. Daisy the sunburst anthias, big bird the yellow clown goby, Penn and Teller the clownfish. We call our Randall’s assessor basslet Randall, but not sure that counts :)

I used to name my fish when I first started and didn't know anything. After a few deaths with the kids, I decided to stop naming them... After I learned enough my fish started living but I kept with my superstition that naming kills them LOL.

son/gf names em, I dont particularly like naming em as i like the actual types of fish but they have fun with it
misbar clowns- Hyder and Super orange
Yellow Tang- yello
Starry blenny- Mr. Fish
purple firefish pair- the twins

I name fish and inverts, but not corals. My clown pair is called Max and Delilah, my cleaner shrimp is Jacques (typical), my emerald crab is Mr. Crabs, my hermits are all Harry and my snails are all Henry. I want a mandarin for my 20g and I'd name him Mando (huge Star Wars fan!!)

Oh yes, of course, meet Jimmy and Bert, always together lol

I name them after a while, once I can get familiar with their dispositions and behaviors. I name all of my tangs after historical swords and weapons (gladius, katana bludgeon) and I use various naming ploys for other types of fish.

Every fish I have has a name, and it winds up matching their personalities. Used to have thanos the red belly piranha. Also I have a banded leporinus now named deadeye due to a piranha bite to the face.
I’ve always wanted a volitan to call simba and a black volitan to call scar.

I only name captive bred fish. All my wild caught fish that I have named have died on me. So now I think it’s bad luck. My maroon clowns are named Theresa and Philip May after the former UK prime minister and her husband.

I do... I have a pair of clowns named Bill and Ted, a Yellow Watchman Goby named Alan Moore, a pistol shrimp named Hellboy and a Kole tang named Babs. I don’t name any of my snails or hermits or anything else though.

My wife names my fish:

Mocha clowns - Bonnie & Clyde
Blue jaw triggers - Betty & Barney
Ornate wrasse - Speckles
Melanurus wrasse - Stripes

Worst part is I find myself calling them by their names as well....

Yep I feel like they will die if I name them! Everyone thinks I'm weird for not!

I do name the fish. They’re pets and idk, it adds to it for me.

my two occ clowns are Bonnie and Clyde.
I had a valentini named PJ (puffy James)
Foxface was dubbed the incredible sulk by my gf
Haven’t named my 3 firefish yet
