I too like to let my dog walk around with several ticks sucking his blood. No biggie, right? I mean, he hasn't *died* of it.

I don’t think that’s really a fair comparison. You don’t have to give a dog a 30 day treatment of poison to get rid of ticks.
 
My Achilles is how I know that one particular tank is ich free. As for my other tanks I'd say 99% certain they're ich free as well. Those tanks are too small to add an Achilles so I cant be to sure about the other 1% nor do I want to chance it.

Add a few saltwatwer acclimated black mollies and you'll know soon enough

Small 10g freshwater tank (Uugghh, I feel gross just saying it) , no lid, top off with 1.026. Acclimated in 10 days or so.

I'm doing so as we speak for my new QT protocol.

It's comparing an animal you've decided to let live with a parasite with one that you wouldn't dream of doing the same.

The only difference really is convenience (cost comes under that) and ethical thinking . I don't see how the comparison Is unfair

TTM is drug free and takes 12 days.

The problem is that people don't want to invest the time, since it's 'inconvenient'

If you do it upfront as you buy fish, you don't even have to do a fallow period. Patience and attention save a ton of heartache in this hobby
 
Sorry to say that this is probably not true. Sustainance ich can 'hide' in places that may not be apparent. My fish are spot free and behave as if they are ich free, yet it persists in my system and has for many years. I felt that my system was likely ich free when I attempted to add an Achilles last year. Using water from the DT, it quickly developed spots in QT. I was able to cure him, but had to resell ….
Indeed. I have ich in my tank but it’s only visible on newly added fish for a couple of days, a week at the most until all visible spots are gone.

Its unfair because I would NEVER poison my dog for 30 days for a few ticks, especially without even confirming the ticks are there in the first place. And I'm pretty sure most dog owners would agree. People that don't QT are not neccessarily lazy, some of us believe that destroying a fish's immune system by poisoning them without even confirming they are sick is the unethical thing to do.
 
Nothing to be confused about. I try to get the fish right out of the box before the LFS puts them in his tank. Or, if they sell quarantined, or "observed" fish, I will pay extra if they keep them for me out of quarantine or any medications until I get them. :cool:
Oh got it!! That’s what I was thinking but wasn’t sure! Ive always really liked that idea. I’m not a fan of any of my LFS’s tanks... I assume that’s worked out well for you so far? Thanks for the share.
 
Seems like most evidence indicates that if the fish are spot-free, then the tank is ich-free. The parasite has a relatively short lifespan (from days to a couple months), and fish become immune if they survive their initial exposure, so then the parasites have no potential host, and will die.
This is not correct. Cryptocaryon Irritans (ich) can remain undetected in a tank indefinitely only to "show up" during a stress event. A fishes immunity does not prevent them from hosting the parasite. It will help the fish resist infection and as such you wont see the fish covered in white spots as the parasites are only feeding on the prime locations such as in the gills.

Most dog owners I know use a flea and tick collar or do time release drops. You don't?

Besides- TTM is drug free and can break the ich life cycle in 12 days.

In that context, it's less toxic than a tick treatment. Not as convenient as placing a collar though
 
Option 4. Who knows? Never seen it but that doesn't mean it's not there and if it's in there, everything looks healthy so does that mean my fish are more robust for living with it or could they actually be healthier if it wasn't in there? But if I can't see it does it make a sound if it falls in the forest with no one to hear it?

Which is why I do a hybrid TTM protocol with extended observation.

I've also seen talk of using H2o2 successfully to rid various parasites recently.

Only black mollies available is from Petco in my neck of the woods. I will never put anything from Petco in any of my tanks unfortunately - fresh or saltwater

If you saltwater acclimate the mollies, any freshwater parasites die as the salinity increases. Then they are naive to any marine pathogen exposure if you use freshly made saltwater (don't reuse water change water)

I agree TTM is much less harmful than copper but it is unfortunately is not the first recommendation most of the time.
