Just took the top off of my tank for a new light i bought. Then the idea of having 4 dogs that bark a ton entered my mind. Now i have the question of since i have an open top tank would that affect my creatures?

Mine dont, but one of the guys at my LFS has wrasse that jump out of the tank when his dog barks near the tank!

Interesting, on this note, has anyone experimented with playing different kinds of music next to coral tanks to see if it has an impact on the coral? I know when Mythbusters did it with regular plants it was interesting to see and I've been curious what would happen if I have the Coral jamming out all day to music?

Lol, crank some Amon Amarth and the coral starts to grow like crazy.

I had a college student do a music study at the hatchery I work at. He played different music in the room with the fish. I don't think there was much difference.

Sound under the water will make more of a difference, at least with fish.

Interesting.

So, the thought I had was to do a few small fiberglass tables with underwater speakers or as close to the water as possible (possibly floating speaker) and play music through them to see the impact on the coral itself.

I honestly just think it would be cool to see if my coral jams out the same way I do. Thats what Im really trying to find out here. Does my Zoa prefer Taylor Swift or the Backstreet Boys or some MJ or Elvis or maybe even some EDM kinda thing....

If you watch shark week (or shark month) you'll hear it mentioned occassionally that the ocean is a very loud place, much louder than we imagine. So I don't worry about it

Sounds great, i read that sharks are actually atracted to metal music. I forget where but scientists played different types of music and then when they played Slayer, great white sharks swam towards the speaker.

I'd be extremely surprised if a coral could detect any sound, short of very strong vibrations that moved the water in contact with it which might have an effect.

I crank metal in my house on the daily.
Amon Amarth, Opeth, Nightwish, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Slayer, Pantera, Cannibal Corpse... they all see to enjoy it. Then again, many of my fish are named after metal musicians.

Nice! I was hoping i would get a reaction with that name drop. I just got a long sleeve with Put you back into the oar on the back of it.

Haha! Cool and...well...fitting!

I don’t know what the corals would actually think of music but I can assure you they won’t hear or care about the dogs. Sound does not travel very well, that is why people can have pistol shrimp. The noise is as loud as a jet, but through the water you hear only a pop.

I thought i would make a thread about it because i used to have a freshwater tank when my house was being worked on and they all died. I’m starting to suspect it wasnt the noise but because i got the fish from petsmart.
