Sounds like it’s really up to you, definitely throw some varnish on the finished product cause that will seal it and keep moisture out. If you go by way of the handyman, make certain he uses accurate cuts and everything is square. Also make certain the top frame is supported by the vertical part of the stand like rocketscientist was saying. If you think adding some crossmembers for sway/twisting support would be best, then let him do it. I think it would be overbuilt at that point but you can’t go wrong with it. Worst comes to worst it holds the tank up and you spent a little extra to sleep better at night.

I wouldn’t do an iron stand, iron and saltwater don’t mix that well…

The colored computer model all over this post shows you the minimum support your tank needs. The top frame work needs full support on all corners from 2/4s not screws. Look at the purple boards. The frame work rest on these putting the load on them. If what you are getting doesn't do this it will fail

I already have a particle board stand from petsmart-is this better? Same size, not sealed obviously.

The saw is so you can build the stand your self. Particle board is garbage. Just because some one tells you it's alright don't make it so. Go read the reviews.

Consider what happens to particle board when it gets wet. Not something I would trust to support a full tank. JMO

The pic the handyman posted from DIYKing is just a larger version of my original design. It would do the job just fine. Instead of more boards, adding plywood to the outside is another good method to prevent twisting. The base design shouldn’t need it but there’s no reason you couldn’t add it to be safe. Same for a center support.

That stand could hold up your entire house. Talk about overkill - you could have made two or three stands with that much wood and still have some left over.

Agree top stand is better as-is, but I would probably take the bottom and add some vertical supports to it on what I assume is the back, facing us. If you look it appears the front (other side) has verticals, likely due to lack of center support.

I bet it does! You even mitered the corners, which serves no purpose at all other than looking amazing. True mark of craftsmanship there.

As a contractor of 30+ years think the first stand is better and more than enough. If it’s not to be sheeted would add some diagonal supports. If you’re sheeting it no need.

As a hobbyist of 40 years would make the stand deeper and maybe taller (for skimmer) too. Span the difference across the top with 2x6 with a cross braces in the middle. This will allow for more room for big sump, fuge, and ato reservoir that you’ll likely end up wanting.

Was it really safe to place weather strip foam on top of the frame as mentioned by a couple of people here?... I was told foam does not go under rimmed tanks and it is for imperfections like bumps and such under a rimLESS tank.

If the foam were to compress enough for the middle part to touch the glass on a rim tank, it could crack it.

The black rim on the tank protects it from imperfections just like foam does for rimless...
