Hi all, I am new do this site, but have been keeping a reef tank for about 7 years now. I have a 100gal tank with the eshopps R200 sump and a reef octopus skimmer. I typically do a 20-30% water change every 3 weeks.
Recently I had an outbreak of Ich that killed almost all my fish after I added a harliquin tusk. I quarantined the remaining fish and took my 100gal reef tank down and left it fallow for 5 weeks. By the way I tried treating the tank with Kickich and of course it did not work. I actually took the opportunity to reaquascape the tank with pukani rock while it sat fallow .Unfortunately I did not remove the sand as I think maybe I should have now.
To restock the tank I purchased a dog faced puffer and a niger trigger, also a 7 line wrasse was the only survivor from the tank meltdown. All three of these fish were in my 36 gal quarantine tank for 3-5 weeks in copper (coppersafe). Everyone appeared healthy,so I transfered them to the display tank. The puffer started getting ich after about 1 week. He has continued to eat well and seems fine, but the Ich is not going away! He is scratching some and has some white spots on his eyes but acts hungry all the time. I really like this fish and dont want to see him deteriorate.
After a month of this and he has not died shouldn't his immunity have kicked in? I'm not sure what to do, did a dip in hydroplex a few days ago with no change in his spots .
I'm nervous to put him back in the quarantine tank as now after reading about puffers and copper im not sure the original treatment is not what stressed him and caused the ich. Also where did the ich come from after leaving the tank fallow for 5 weeks? Ugh!
The tank parameters remain stable at nitrates 5-15, phosphates 0.5, ph 8.3, sg 10.24.
Any advise on the best way to proceed would be appreciated. Puffers seem to have a lot of controversy on what they can and can not handle .Btw the other two fish in the tank are perfectly healthy with now signs of ich. Recently I have been doing water changes every 2 weeks and vacuuming the sand as well as feeding food soaked in focus, metroplex and garlic. There are a few corals in the tank as well.

I love the dog faced puffer, he's got so much personality. And I just love when he crinkles his nose at me. Lol
