Doing the dirty work: Have you used filter rollers with your reef?

They look amazing. I totally get it. But, theyre just not 4 me. I try to keep a very simple system....or...plugs at a minimum. Lights, heater, skimmer, return. That's it.

Set up a new tank with a fleece roller. It kept my tank so clean… too clean and I could never figure out why it wouldn’t stabilize. Had to remove all filters for a month to allow things to come to life. After a while I put it back in to maintain stability

Yeah I would love to know these guys water parameters with these rollers. I have two local friends that have them and it tanked there N and P so fast they were battling dinos for months.

Im considering using no sock or any filtration

With a heavy fish load and high nitrate/phosphate- I think filter roller and the small Refugium in my sump currently, I think it (filter roller) is something I should try. My two socks are not cheap either when replacing them 4”square types (eshopps).luckily my corals are still pretty happy .

Having a rollermat is a necessity with a large system. I have the Red Sea Reefmat 1200, as pictured it does it’s job well! I used filtersockes previously, and I found it cumbersome and often forgot to change them every couple days. My ReefMat lasts a month on a roll and only takes a couple minutes to change.

I started with a compact theiling roller mat and it was useful but a pain to maintain. I now use a Red Sea roller mat 1200 and love it. Probably one of the best new products in the market. With this device you can pair down your skimmer size and save a ton of electricity. I get 2-3 months with each role. I highly recommend this product if you have the room in your sump.

Filter roller was major game changer for me. I wasn't disciplined enough to change socks or floss. I consider it a normal expense now just like salt, food, additives, etc.

I installed a ReefMat 500 nearly 2 months ago and I've currently used 15m of the 28m roll. It was easy to install and once it's setup you just let it do it's thing and forget about it, it's by far the best investment and time saver I ever did.

currently using the Clarisea Gen2-3000 on my RSR525XL - costs about £14 every 2 months to replace the roller! One of the best bits of kit I installed on my tank, and thankfully I got to do it during build stage, so was a lot easier to mod the sump and do pipework dry

I've been using the Klir 7 on my Eshopps R300 sump. Works great, had to do some small adjustments to it but no regrets. What filter socks? (Never again).

Reefmat 500, awesome tool. I dont miss changing socks every 2 or 3 days. Nitrates & Phosphates stay right where I want them now.

Reefmat 1200 here - and loving how low maintenance it is vs socks. Previously had a Bubble Magus but the roll changes were so difficult - I needed a hammer and screwdriver to free the roll from the uptake. The Reefmat makes roll changes very easy with its splittable uptake roller.

You can get much cheaper roller paper from a third party but the micron size is much finer (80 and 50 micron vs ~200 micron Red Sea) so beware of bottoming out nutrients. I did try their 80 micron ones and my nutrients did drop a lot and I learned my SPS didn't like it! To work around you could bypass some of the water going into the filter roller.

Or, just use the Red Sea expensive rolls. Mine last just over 2.5 months.

I picked up a redsea 500 a month ago and its been amazing although I haven't changed a roll yet. But buying 40$ woth of socks vs 19.99 for a roll and its not even 50% through yet seems like its gonna pay for itself.

Using a Hmahli Fleece roller on a 200 gallon system. Awesome. Recently I noticed I wasn't using any fleece. Looked in the fleece chamber and there was massive population of Amphipods in there cleaning the fleece for me. They are so productive, I'm harding pulling fleece ATM.

Had the Reefmat 1200 on my 150 display and it was for me the best equipment to date. One roll lasted about 2-3 months.
Sadly I downsized to a AIO and the options are very limited for rollers.

Reefmat 1200 and so far rolls last about 2.5 months. Best investment ever as cleaning filter socks and having a replacement supply ready every week just can be painful and they don't last as long as many of us think IF we're using them correctly IMHO.

I have the RE filter roller in my dreambox. After about 6 months of tinkering with it I finally figured out how to use it properly, and ever since, I'll proudly tell anyone who will listen it's the best thing I ever bought for my reef tank. (It was stupid expensive though.)
