Hey guys! I'm completely new to everything salt water -- so please be gentle!!

I've tried researching saltwater aquariums, but to no avail. I'm looking to ask for help! I'm in search of some good resources to learn from (in addition to this site) such as articles and books! I've tried looking for saltwater aquarium books, (even for dummies!) but haven't had any luck. I'm very passionate about anything water, as I teach swim lessons. I'd love to get into this hobby, but just don't know where to start! I want to learn more before I get in over my head and end up overwhelmed.

Thank you guys! :)

there are very good sticky threads on here for beginners...go to the forums section and click on New to saltwater where you posted this thread

above the active threads there is a sticky thread section, I suggest reading as much as you can and maybe try and find someone on here or local that is in the hobby...I find it better to learn in person

feel free to message me anytime with questions

Thank you! I'm definitely reading all the different threads, but I'm getting a little lost with all the lingo.

Oh no. No gentleness for you. We are going to put you through the ringer.
Of course I am kidding. You have happened on the friendliest forum there is. We are always gentle. :)

Ha! Thanks! :p I just tried setting up a small tank, and got criticized in the past... I'm just looking for help!

My first suggestion would be to decide what kind of tank you want. Reef? Fish only? Predator?

Welcome to the club R2R;). We go easy on you.:D

Welcome to R2R!
There is no harshness here at all.
We are all glad, happy and willing to help you out :-)
As mentioned read the stickies
If you have specific questions we will all gather to help you out.

Its a daunting task to start and good choices from the start will help make it a beautiful reef.
As with all reefs it takes time so be patient

Jeff may be correct (and I hate agreeing with him) A simple reef tank is easy, especially if you don't want fish right away.

Hi Todd;)

I don't mean to offend anyone by this but do yourself a favor and read a couple books before hitting the interwebs. There is just too much and when you start link hopping you get confused and so many things contradicts others beliefs. I believe there are now 3 saltwater for dummies books. I own the second one and it just failed to thoroughly explain a few key things like what a refugium is/does.
The best book I've read to date is
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saltwater Aquariums by Mark Martin and ret talbot.
Sorry it changed the font on me, not sure how to undo it. I also spent countless hours on liveaquaria perusing the saltwater section familiarizing myself with fish and coral names and what they look like. Good luck, and don't be afraid if you do want to start here. This is a fantastic site filled with incredibly friendly people willing to answer your questions.

A really good reference book to start with is Bob Fenner's The Conscientious Marine Aquarist, which covers a broad range of general topics without overwhelming. When you get an opportunity, you might also want to check out this post I wrote some time back on researching a saltwater aquarium: http://www.saltwatersmarts.com/research-your-new-saltwater-aquarium-dont-gamble-with-success-541/.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely be looking into both of those! Nice article, by the way! :)

I went to 4 libraries in our county and just asked for the aquarium/ocean section. I've read my fair share as have most others. Feel free to pm me and I can reply with a couple more books to look into.
