Dorm Tank Ideas

Would I need an hob filter?
How different shrimp can you put together in a 5-10 gallon tank? How many shrimp in a tank that big?
Thanks.

Planted shrimp tanks usually dont need a filter. Just some aeration, heater, and good water change regime.
You can keep a lot of shrimp. If maintained properly they will breed as well.
It's hard to keep different species together because they usually like slightly different water parameters. Lots of info on the web about keeping them

The Amano shrimp are the easiest keep and usually what most people will start with before trying to keep the more exotic and delicate strains.

Go through read the info on the all the different shrimp on that linked page. It's an excellent resource.

I ran my Spec V without a skimmer. I used a 3 inch sand bed a ton of rock and added Chemipure blue to the filter chamber. I did not have any fish, just a pair of shrimp and lots of coral. The only issue I had was keeping the water topped off. Other than that it was a very easy tank.

Seriously I feel like that's the only issue with nanos other then that small part it's a very easy tank to keep so don't listen to those who try to discourage nanos although do listen to their advice, cuz for as long as u can dedicate say an hour a day to making sure everything is working and to watch ur tank run as to make sure everything is healthy it will work! I can proudly say that I'm the owner of a natural looking 5 gallon fowler (for now) nano aquarium and I love love just loooove it l[emoji173]️[emoji173]️[emoji173]️[emoji4][emoji4]

Nano salt water tanks are notoriously hard to keep. I would highly recommend a planted fresh water tank in the 10 gal range.

Not at all imo I started with a contour v upgraded to a 10 and downgraded back to a regular 5 gal and I love it

@Baby Ray I do think you Shld go saltwater but only if u have the time and if u want dm me and I'll tell u how I went about it

I am still leaning towards rock nems and zoas with a couple types of anemone shrimp and maybe a porlecuin crab (probably spelled that wrong)

And yea on lil tanks. Ato ato ato ato

I will defiantly have to get one of those micro smart ATO's
The freshman dorms at the high school don't have AC so they get really hot. I am not sure if I will be able to afford a chiller but I would a least need a fan to keep the temp down.

keep a cooking thermometer in the room and check the ambient temp. heating is easy. cooing is tough above 84 with a fan rig . https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/diy-cooling-fan-temp-controller-easy.254168/

I had a 5 gal on the desk here for 2.5 years w a clown and my nem crab. ATO light aquaclear also a hob refugium, for nutrient export. it got too hot and i lost a fw corals I shouldn't have had in there anyway.(gorg)
but the crab lived 4 + years in two other tanks.

I won the JBJ picotope tank at MACNA from The JBJ booth. Have not set it up yet though. My daughter (who is 15) is wanting to turn it into a pest tank full of nudibranches and such. I think it would be awesome for a shrimp goby pair.

I need to open it and look at the light. I may be able to replace the bulb with an LED bulb.

Ill buy it from you for the right price ;)

The JBJ pico was the first planted tank I did, I had 2 dwarf puffers in it ( will try to find pictures) then SW bug got me. 2 months into, switched from that small one to an 8 gal. Still nervous about going bigger. So 8 gal. Mr. Aqua tank off eBay. Hob filter for up to 20 gal. Gave great filtration and movement and a hydro wave maker. Heater and small weekly water changes. I had a clown goby, clown fish and a PJ. Cardinal. All small at the time. And added easy to take care of corals. Tried a couple of hob skimmers and was just too stress full for me so, skimmer less. Well now I'm up to my 30 gal. Which you know about, but a small nano can be done and I know if anyone can do it you can. :D
