I plan to drill my tank for an internal overflow the sump, I've never drilled through glass before, I'm still waiting on MarineLand to get back to me on if its tempered or not, but if it's not I will be drilling it. Any tips on how to/where to drill? Where should the overflow be located? Any tips are appreciated.

I don't know $ difference 220 stock vs reef ready, but is it worth the risk? Also warranty void if you drill, and I bet Marineland will tell you btm. of standard 220 is tempered.

MarineLand probably won't give you an answer if the glass it tempered or not. Here is a video on how to check tempered glass. Hope it helps.

I know the tank you are drilling is a lot bigger but here is a video I shot, to give you an idea on where I installed the overflow and returns.

We went to a store that told us that some brands have sides and bottoms made of both. So I would make sure that they know exactly where you want to drill. We took ours to that store and they did it for us. Both of our tanks have been drilled, one is acrylic and one is glass.

Hi Kasey,

Are you building a DIY overflow or buying acommercial unit? There are a lot if options and ways to implement an overflow.

Yes, If you run it lower on a rimmed tank your water line will show. The way I did it the water line goes all the way up to the rim.
What do you reccomend I plan on it touching the top seal like yours, is there any problem having it in the middle of the tank?

I bought the overflow seperate, DIY, planning on doing a be an animal setup, my overflow does not have holes in it. Does that mean I will need to drill holes in it the same size as the ones in the tank? I need 3 holes for be an animal setup.

Most overflows are already drilled. I used the Eshopps overflow on my 40BR frag tank build. It came with the hole saw, template and everything needed.

Hey can you comment on the quality of the Eshopp one... Silent? dimensions in the tank? (how deep is the skim box in the tank). can yuo run a herbie off of it?
