Duncan help

This is happening with my Duncan now. Normally it's the size of a softball. Now the tentacles are out but only little nubs. Like you, it was in the same place since the tank was started and then one day closed. Not sure if you've tried dipping, but I tried with CoralRx and Revive on separate occasions with no net positive results. I was running my take at near zero Nitrates but have moved away from that. Like yours, the color is still there, just not the extension of the tentacles. Good luck, following this to see how it unfolds for you. Since closing up it has been about 3 months of the little nubs and not the long tentacles it once had.
I am going to try dipping tonight, I'm just at a loss because it closed up out of nowhere. It is about 3 years old as is the other one that is open fine. Hope to get some further advice. Good luck with yours also

It's both confusing and frustrating because I can't think of anything that has changed that might have caused the Duncan to close up either. Have you introduced anything new or is there a new coral nearby? I'm at the point where maybe a Triton test to get a detailed look at my water parameters might be worthwhile. How does everything else in your tank look? In my tank, it's only the Duncan that seems to be affected which makes it even more frustrating to figure out. I've tried this but maybe it will work for you and that is to try moving it to different parts of the tank and leave it for a week. If no results, move it again. Low flow/ low light, medium flow low light, etc.. Again, good luck and keep us updated.

Nothing new or changed. No corals near by. It is on top of my clowns (pair) cave but always has been so not sure if all of a sudden they are bothering it although I haven't witnessed it. All others are fine so I share your frustration. I will be dipping later and maybe put in another spot...but why after 3 years would it suddenly be unhappy??? Very frustrating indeed

Dipped in coral x, no bugs or worms... moved lower and away from where clowns cave is...fingers crossed
Is it doing any better? I'm am fairly new to duncans and have never seen my close for more than a few hours so I know I'd be freaking out too.

2 months definitely seems like a long time to be closed. How long has it been there?

I have two duncans in two tanks. One is high nitrates with hair algae trying to grow everywhere, the other is ULNS to the point I have to feed corals because they are losing color. Both duncans are thriving. One gets high light and high flow and low nurients. The other gets low flow lower night and high nutrients. They seems to take whatever I put them in pretty well.

Yeah, that's how mine has been looking. I moved it to another tank and it looks the same so in my case I would say that it is not a water quality issue. I'm wondering if it has an infection? I've dipped mine but never in an iodine solution. Have you tried that? I've tried CoralRx and Revive.

I've read how Duncan's can be very fussy and the first to notify of water quality issues. Mine so far has been very hardy and resilient. Being in both my qt and now dt seems to be happy no matter what and my water is far from prestine. If it does close it's only for a few hours. I know that doesn't help your situation at all. Have you tried spot feeding to see if it responds at all?

Did you ever figure this one out?
He didn't make it sadly, he slowly died. I had him for 4 years, guess it was his time. Other duncan is great, has about 12 heads and other corals also great! Sad he didn't make it but it is what it is

Thanks for the update. Mine has improved, not what it was, but marked improvement. Wanted to compare notes and narrow it down.
