That's what I currently have. Anything better than would be easy to convert it to? I'm not very handy with plumbing. Perhaps a kit?

Bean Animal all the way if you have enough holes in your tank (or can get it drilled).

My new 150g has a Bean and I love it. Quiet, no floods, easy to tune, etc. It has a center trapezoidal overflow with holes for 3 1" bulkheads drilled in it. Return lines are drilled high on the back wall.

My 75g corner used a durso (often loud flushing noise despite tuning top hole size extensively) and is drilled for a 1" drain and two 3/4" supply lines in the bottom of the overflow. I am going to use those 3/4" lines for the main siphon and the open channel and use the 1" for the emergency overflow. this will require drilling a new return in the back, but seems easy enough

Interesting but way over my skills level. Plus I only have one drain and one return.

Is the existing setup giving you any problems? Nothing wrong with a Durso if you accept it's limits.

Thanks,
Harry

You could look into getting a Glass Holes Durso kit. It's the quietest single drain ready made kit that I've ever read about.

Thanks,
Harry

What have you tried to make it quiet? They can be loud as heck if they're not dialed in, but can be pretty whisper quiet, when they are.

I bought a dozen caps for my Durso and tried it with a variety of different hole sizes. I eventually found one that was reasonably quiet most of the time, but still did the flushing thing regularly. I tolerated it for more than 10 years but the comparison with the Bean Animal overflow on my new tank is night and day. In addition, I like the extra safety of the Bean Animal compared with the single pipe Durso and so am converting the tank over.

If your drain and return are in the same overflow, you could use a Herbie style overflow and reroute the return.
