Has anybody got it to look like the vendor pic? Ive heard people say it needs to get bigger to show the colors but if that's the case, it's the only watermelon I know of where this is true. Ive seen quite a few hobbyist pix of this coral and none, including mine, look anything like the ECC/Buy the Reef pix.

Someone, please prove me wrong...

The only one i have ever seen that comes close was Juniors pic and piece.

His pictures are really "nice" though, so that makes it hard to judge.

I have heard the same thing about the ECC - I'm not sure if Chris (143Gadgets) has it or not, but if he does, it should be colored up perfect in his system - so maybe he can post a picture.

I should be getting my ECC Hybrid from 143gadgets next week, will see what happens with it's colors.

In my opinion I think there are a lot of chalices out there that don't look ANYTHING like the pictures.
I know this cause I bought a bunch.

I'd love to know how the Melting pot and Trops acid trip pictures were taken, cause I have never seen a frag or mini-colony that looked anything close to it.

I think a lot of the pictures out there were taken with a lot of "help" to assist in hype - read..."to make more money"

Its all good though - it got me into chalices, and there are a lot of them that look sweet under any lighting. But I can take an actinic picture of GSP and it looks insane! Almost everything in the tank looks insane under powerbrites/actinics. Throw in some yellow glasses and you are bound to want everything. Then when the regular lights come on, they are the blandest things out there.

I'm not saying the melting pot/trops are bland and crappy under regular lighting - but I have yet to have ANYONE ask what they were - yet some of my cheaper, less known pieces are always asked about.

This isn't meant to be offensive to ANYONE. Its just my personal opinion, so take it for what it is worth.

My ecc frag is tiny so I can't say for sure but it doesn't show any red yet.

I think gadgets hybrid is different any way right?

Yes - Gadgets Hybrid is not the ECC - its a totally different piece.

Cut to the chase man, I dig it :D

Guys I've seen the Trops Acid trip mother colony with my own eyes and believe it or not, it looked that good before they chopped it up. But this comes from someone who just sold a frag of it, so take it FWIW lol.

And about juniors "ecc/4 color" I know he split that with some other folks on here maybe someone will chime in, but I've seen that one too and it looks closer too the original Ecc pic than any size original Ecc piece I have ever seen. That has me thinking it's completely new morph that junior has/had???

The ECC Hybrid colony does look like the photo on Buy The Reef, I have seen it in person. I might be wrong, its been several months, but I believe that the colony was under T5's.

Well, I know you're a credible guy so thanks for the input...

I keep all my corals under t5s...

There is a reason that this piece isn't sold as a WYSIWYG under regular light. Because it is brown and red.

This is what it is being sold under because its the only way they could get $400 a frag.

I have the melting pot, and it is pretty much the same thing. Brown and red, but cool under actinics.

I have been burned on quite a few pieces, which is no big deal, just part of the game I guess. Although I have learned my lesson - albeit the hard way. :choler:
When and if I sell frags of anything, they all are under full lighting with no adjustment at all. There is no reason to doctor up anything or do actinics shots. If someone wants a piece of something, they should have the full information given to them, and in this case it is true pictures of what it will look like in their tank and in my tank under normal conditions. If normal conditions for them is actinics and powerbrights, by all means they can refer to that picture to see what it looks like, but they will have both pictures to choose from.
I paid a ton of money for some of this stuff, but I am not going to mislead someone the same way I did, so I can get the same money out of it as I paid. If the person likes it, they'll pay, if not oh well. I'm not going to sell them a piece though, and then have them open the box and be as ticked as I was when I first got it. Thats just not going to happen regardless of the money involved. If anything they know I am honest and will know exactly what the piece will look like right out of the box.

Thats my .02 on the whole photo vs. actual piece thing.

Junior's 4 color & ECC Hybrid Watermelon are the same. I remember Junior said in some threads. He got directly from Jim

I'm just saying what half the people out there are thinking too.

Its no secret that some of these corals are a joke for the money being asked.
A lot of them are NICE for sure. 90% of the ones I have were worth the money, to me.

I wish people would lay stuff out on the table instead of EVERYONE thinking the same thing, yet no one says anything.

I call it like I see it. No harm, no foul.

If someone thinks totally different, and wants to post on it, I totally respect that.

I have a package deal up in about a week for the Jabawaki and some others. Spent a weeee bit to much money this last couple months :) - so I am forced to cut them :( So my money will be were my mouth is.

This is not correct in 2 ways...

-Junior got his colony that he split with a few people from a guy getting out of the hobby

-the 4 color and the ECC hybrid are 2 different corals. I have both and they're nothing alike...

I agree. I have seen many chalice in person and then the owner will take a photo. At that point all I can think is......... who ever purchases that coral will be ticked.
I take a lot of photos every week and its very easy to "enhance" a photo without PhotoShop. Many times the light will hit the coral just right and the camera will pick up or naturally enhance the highlights of the coral. In turn, it looks like an awesome coral. Many people will take this naturally enhanced photo and use it to sell the coral. When they say that PhotoShop was not used, they are most likely being honest. But in reality, its not how the coral looks to the naked eye. On the other hand, there are many dishonest people that will use PhotoShop and claim that they did not.
Myself, I try to capture the natural colors and when people get the coral in there tank they always tell me that the photos do no justice for the coral.
Back on topic, the ECC Hybrid is a great looking Chalice, just as nice as in the photo.
I think after a coral goes through the stress of being cut over and over again, many times they start to change for the worse. When a coral is high in demand, typically they get cut a little more than whats healthy for them....

I will say it looks nicer than I remember but it still doesn't look like the colony pic...
