Ecotech Radion G5 Speculation

I have to agree 100% with you. Reefers are way to dumb to be empowered with so much control. Like simple minded children, they cannot resist fiddling with their new toys. For those that cannot be trusted with this new found power, they can always go with metal halide, T5, black box LEDs, Kessils (without the controller), ect... Leave the grown folks LEDs to those who can truly handle the power!

I’m hanging on to my ATI LED PowerModule. That f****er grew coral better than anything I’ve owned yet!

I would be more than willing to own the Radion G5 with a Diffuser for my smaller reef. I can’t wait till those hit the market. They better make them cheaper too. This $800 for 1 radion is crazy. Do these people think we’re made of money? Pffft!

I thought that too with the Vortech sales last time, and nothing new came out. May be correct though, about time to get people to fork another couple grand into a lighting upgrade

There may be something brewing but I know that it is not a G4 replacement. It's been a while since something new came out so I am hopeful that something new is on the horizon. I just hope that whatever it is, it is big!!!

If I had to guess, maybe they are going to move away from the Radion puck design to more of a panel design to improve coverage. I wouldn’t be shocked if the LED layout resembled Philips CoralCare, complete with a diffuser too. Who knows? My guess can be as good or bad as anyone’s. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m curious to see if they actually change anything or actually fix the problems more than a handful have mentioned. I’m also curious to see if they will even stay in the same category as the new mitras ghl 7200. Those seem to be the new super high end standard of leds puck version.

It will also be interesting to see currents new high powered strip light. From speaking directly with them, they will mimic the older beast marine pros, but will only use 3 watt cree lights full Bluetooth etc, and 60 degree lens again (nothing official) I do know they will incorporate the loops system into the new ones and they will be rumored only about the same cost as the older marine orbit pros which were about 809 each.

There are lots and lots of newer lights coming out with newer technologies never seen before. Even has we see these massive high powered lights we still only need 200 par to grow pretty much any coral.

Something I would really like them to incorporate into new lights is real weather patterns from actual reef locations. For example in Cairns say it’s rainy for a week, well the light follows the weather pattern of natural reefs. I mean come on Mother Nature can’t be too far wrong. Of course it would be a feature and needed beta testers, but it’s not always sunny at the beaches.

Another nice feature would to be to add a simple remote control that non tech savoy people can figure out. Yes we can all use smart phones but example hmmmmmm me I have only used a smart phone now for maybe 2 months. I can’t say that I love it much (and I’m 25). But if one pays for all these features then let’s make them easy enough with or with out a smart phone to use, aka a simple Remote.

I and I speak for me, want to enjoy my reef and set it forget it and just watch nature grow. In addition, as I have to question my own thoughts at times including this post. I hope that companies don’t need to reinvent the wheel every 6 months. Yes I am hoping to beta test the new currents and I may or may not swap them over.

I have recently purchased three of the mitras ghl 7200, and wow they are much harder to set up than my currents. The mitras will be running my new 425 tank. Yet compared to the radions that I have tested, the mitras are like the currents except you have six channels and all the same controls as the radions, the program menu is just easier.

Anyone who has seen the display tanks at World Wide Corals, Sanjay Joshi, and Mike Paletta will agree, the product is great as it sits and is a proven performer. AI has a similar design and David Saxby and Stuart Bertram have proved to have amazing results with them as well. If you are not successful with the Radions, don't blame them. The problem is not the light, but the user.

Look at it from Ecotech's side. Why would they want to be like any of the three lights you guys have stated? They are on the top of the mountain when it comes to Aquarium LED Lights. There is no reason for them to look to the bottom of the mountain for inspiration when every manufacturer is looking up wishing they were them! Yes, those three companies are at the bottom looking for scraps!

Although Phillips has potential and a massive bankroll behind them, so far, they have not been willing to open that bankroll to fund a truly competitive solution in this fringe market. They have instead offered a aesthetically unpleasing commercial warehouse light fixture that they were already producing. Sad really as they could have chosen a more appealing look such as this...

I can actually see hanging one of these above my tank. Not to mention that each of these fixtures weigh 1/3 of the weight of the current fixture.

As for GHL, I truly believe it is one of if not the best engineered LED light . But I cannot ignore the fact that in 2018, they still need a PC to do the initial program before they can be controlled by other devices. I'm a Mac user and once I found out, this fell off my list of contenders. I guess that's why we don't consider Germany as a technological hub for software and computer innovation.

I'm not a fan of Orphek simply because of the materials. Just not sleek enough for me. Not a fan of the fit and finish, Anyone can put a light between two pieces of acrylic and some aluminum mesh that fits in a grove around it. I am shocked none of the other black box manufactures have not done this yet. Before you get mad, there have been multiple people who have commented that the Orphek inside looked just like their previous black box leds when they opened them up.

I'm not saying that the above mentioned lights are not great in their own way. I am saying that they are missing something that appeals to the masses. IMO, the Ecotech Radion, AI Hydra, and Kessill lights have the right combination of features that is keeping the others on the bottom.

Without question the G4 will be considered by many to be "old technology". It's just the name of the game. New things replace old and we just don't like "old".

I agree that a G5 is probably in the works. Hence, the $50 price reduction.

If Ecotech is the “Top of the Mountain” as you say, I would hope that they would improve and evolve from the obvious shortcomings of the current puck design LED fixtures. I believe they’ve done all that they can with the puck design in prior Radion iterations.

Anywho, G4s are on sale and I’m curious to see how Ecotech evolve and innovate their newest generation of LED offerings. Looks like it will be sooner rather than later.

Even if I listed my reasons, lol you would say I’m wrong so I guess we agree to disagree. What’s even more amazing is that most of the parts that Ecotech uses other companies use. Their technology is not rare or unusual, they do it a different way like any company. I guess the led world is the same as the medical world. Example you can get prescribed xanax and for 30 it’s almost 453 dollars a month (aka radions). Or you could do generic such as alprazolam generic, they both make the same dosage, they come in the same shape, colors are different but all in all they treat severe anxiety, but 30 of the alprazolam are only 43 dollars a month (aka mitras ghl, current usa, kessil). If a fancy name is what motivates people, then that is well their right, still doesn’t mean it’s better.

If you share your opinion I will respect it wether I agree or disagree. I may debate your opinion but I will always try to support my statements with facts so you and others can understand how I came to my conclusions.

When I talk about the mountain top, I feel it is Ecotech, AI, and Kessil. They are all comparable price wise as well as power (GHL and Orphek is also in the same price range). But to me, it's not just about what people can afford. It's about what the people desire as well. The masses looking in this price range opt for the big 3 (Ecotech, AI, and Kessil). The other companies with comparable offerings are literally all fighting for a 10% share of the market.

I agree to a certain extent... The 2 aforementioned forms of lighting have the benefit of maximizing coverage and shadow elimination through the use of reflectors. That has yet to be achieved through LED technology.

I am looking forward to see Ecotech’s next generation offering to see if, as a reef lighting “leader,” they truly move the technology forward to address the real coverage issues that hold LED technology back.
