Effect of cooking fumes , candles and diffusers

Hi friends ,

Almost got my tank setup with lights , sump and all electrical connections . But realized I have never checked on the impact of other household things on the tank . So before I go in an all out war with my wife to make changes , wanted to check with you guys .

How impactful are scented candles and diffusers ? Tank is in the living room which has an open kitchen and very close to the kitchen ..
I can definitely get wife not to use sprays or wall socket bulbs or diffusers but no candles will be difficult .

Bigger problem is cooking .. wife loves to cook and it's INDIAN food we are talking here ..

What's the impact of fumes from cooking on reef tank with sps ?
Of course we have excellent ventillation and can open up windows but we are talking Minnesota where it gets really cold ..

May be spend a lot on carbon and replace them weekly ??

Cooking won't make a difference to the tank we eat, cook Indian food 7 days a week 365 days a year! BUT I have read on the back of some diffusers and sents that they can have long term negative effect on fish, now I don't know if you will get the effect from using them or if u have the sents on ur hand and you place it in the water

I am forced to keep my tank in the kitchen and have had no issues with cooking fumes. I also burn candles and I use those wood diffusers, but I only use soy based candles with cotton wicks, and essential oils diffusers, so I can't comment on regular candles and such. We also use pots and pans that are not Teflon because when Teflon burns it puts harmful fumes in the air.

Now thats comforting to know that INDIAN food causes no harm to the tank .. May I know how far is the tank from teh kitchen ?
Diffusers are of little issue as I can always persuade wife not to use them ..

My tank was in the room right next to the kitchen. No more then 3m away, doors open all the time due to kids running around! If u wanted to use candles etc I would say place them on the other side of the room! Shouldn't have a effect unless get the oil in the water. The scent is from the oils burning!

My tank is the divider between the kitchen and the living room and I cook every day and LOVE my curries. I don't worry about it at all.

(if your wife has a nice recipe for naan, I've been looking for one.... mine has been subpar)

I would avoid the candles and scent infusers and such, as they are not all created equal. The squirting aerosol things are spraying droplets that are supposed to hang in the air, those I would avoid.

Since water is made of hydrogen and oxygen, these gases, even in liquid form, can and will absorb odors and chemicals released by cooking. Not sure if our captive ocean creatures would really appreciate curry in the water.
The higher risk here is from smoke, even if YOU don't see or smell it. Also, if you are frying foods, airborne grease particles get everywhere, not just in the water, but also on the outside of the tank, including the glass, your equipment, and lighting.
These risks are mitigated with a tight fitting glass top on the tank, a tank overflow system that will remove aquarium surface water (removes cooking grease), protein skimming and of course the use of carbon.

This is how close my tank is. I've always had tanks in my kitchen.... even on the counter in my seahorse breeding days. Use carbon if it makes you nervous.

Thanks for the reply !! Well am definitely gonna use carbon and have skimmer and lots of pumps to keep the water movement high in the tank ..

@Lionfish Lair - Loved the penninsula tank and the way teh lights are hung .. Are those Orphek leds ?

On a side note - well my wife cooks South Indian food a lot and its simply amazing !! No naans though .. Let me know if you would like a recipe or 2 of exquisite south indian vegetarian food ..

Thanks! Yes, those are Orphek lights. That ceiling box was built to hide the cords which actually run outside of the house. They pop back in through the wall to underneath the stand where the power is.

My last tank was in a 550 sq ft apartment and the tank was roughly 10' from the kitchen. There was horrible airflow in that place. Every time you cooked it would smoke up. I didn't run carbon, and had a very successful SPS Reef. It was also fun as a rimless, open top setup.

In our new apartment I use those wall candle wax plug-ins religiously in every room. I love a good smelling home. I've always had candles, wall plugins and wall wax-candle plugins and never had an issue.

Indian food including grilling, smoke from the candle and diffuser with natural products cause no issues since last 2 years. Everything is kicking and alive.

I cook in a wok all the time and my wife pours her own candles in the kitchen. No problems in the kitchen tank.

I'm also old enough to remember when NO ONE thought that second hand cigarette smoke harmed the innocent nonsmokers in our cars and houses...

I look at it from a bird owners perspective. You have to be extremely careful with these types of things with a bird in the house, ANYWHERE in the house! If I were to burn a Teflon pan, it doesn't matter where the bird is in the house, it will harm him. Therefore if something is not harming a birds delicate respiratory system, I have no worries that it will harm my tanks
