Ever considered torching your tank?

Sooner or later we fall in love with a torch coral and will consider or acquire one for out collection. These corals can be easy to care for or be challenging to even the most experienced hobbyist. Like most Euphyllia coral, they have certain requirements and often for torch, location is best where it receives both medium light and water flow. You want there current in a state where it looks like leaves blowing in the wind. Too much current and you risk tearing their polyps off the skeleton known as polyp bailout. Poly Recession often occurs with too little light or water flow at times. These corals come in many colors and variety and can add great color and growth often splitting right before your eyes,

I made the mistake of getting a torch WAY before I knew enough about reefing to give it a chance. I have frogspawn and hammers now but I haven't gotten back to adding a torch yet.

I will be adding one eventually.

I did the same and i sure many of us have. Theyre too tempting

Yep, they check all the boxes for awesomeness and they also check all the boxes for potential frustration. lol.

mine is growing like crazy under also 300 to 350 PAR..
started from 2 heads.. now it is like 20 heads in a year..

I've never been able to keep one alive. The nice ones are so hyped and overpriced these days I would not even consider gambling on one again. I have a really nice large frogspawn that fills the need for a euphylia and torches are added to the list of things I just can't keep alive in my tanks.

This is literally one of my biggest issues also. Way too much money at risk over a coral that could take a nose dive for no obvious reason.

I think torches are great but require a lot of room that most people dont consider. They are also not an easy coral for beginners. IDK why people suggest to go buy a $100 frag just to watch it die. I've probably killed 4-5 in the beginning.

Lately I've had some paly/zoas take over a rock and I put a torch near it to knock it back a bit.

Good question and you'll get 100 different answers. I'm not willing to risk my frogspawn and hammer (same rock) by adding a torch to the rock also. That's just me though.

I love them but ... so do my clowns. My lone survivor is a three-headed green torch that has hosted them. Its 'reward' is all sorts of lumpy and fat tentacles due to their nipping. Theoretically I'd want more in the tank but the clowns will find as many hosts as they want and torches seem high on their list!

This one's an aussie gold torch. Really short polyps, VERY slow grower (splitting when I got it a year ago, almost done splitting now).

Then there's my dragon soul torch. Much faster growth. 1 head to... more than a lot in under two years. Here's a video of the dragon soul, if you prefer to see it in motion .

Lastly there's my indo pink tip torch (green guy on the left). VERY long tentacles on this guy, and a decently fast grower.

I love them and have had success and failure several times. My current collection according to the seller is a 24k, a black and gold, and a hellfire. I recently lost the bright green one. It was in the process of splitting and then gone.
Mine are probably medium flow and about 180 par with the apogee 510 meter.
