I was feeling bummed about my tank lately. I recently lost my h. crispa and since then I have been battling cyano. I had a disastrous water change on Monday where everything that could go wrong went wrong. I was just hating my tank.

Then today, I looked at my tank and thought I was losing one of my acans. Upon closer inspection, I noticed two babies forming. Then, I looked at my chalice that I did not think was doing too well and it is showing signs of growth and is popping out a new eye. Then, I looked at my rasta zoas that I had thought were goners and there are 6 full polyps and a baby polyp.

Definitely not feeling bummed anymore!!! :)

Wondered if anyone else starts to feel this way???

Yep. It's an up and down battle and when it's down it's a bummer. The highs afterwards are worth waiting for though. I'm just getting over AEFW so I know the bummed feeling.

About a year ago I switched to radions and I fried my tank within a couple days. ( never use led's without a par meter ) I never got over it all but a few sps colonies died. Its taken until about 4 months ago I figured I was going to get into the radions deep and figure out why the stuff happened and start re-stocking and have twice a good of tank as before. As soon as I started seeing frags encrusting and colors poping again I was hooked right back in.! The reef tank has gone up and down w me from the start from ich, to red bugs, to tanks cracking, stands breaking, its a rough hobby ! Makes you really appreciate any spec of a sign of hope lol.

I had a crash on my nano a little while back and it just ripped my heart out. My most stable tank out of my collection just blah, it really made me feel like I hit rock bottom.

I almost sold everything about 4 months ago. I was frustrated about having an accident with Bayer that almost crashed my tank. At the same time I had other struggles with setting up the 40. I was at the point too where I wanted to throw my hands up, sell everything at a huge loss and get out. After a while, things calmed down, corals started coloring up and growing again. It actually gave me that excited feeling like when I first got back into the hobby. In hindsight I'm glad I didn't sell everything because I'm sure by now I would be spending the little money I made by selling everything on a new setup.

When I see some of the tanks on you tube It bums me out when I look at mine. I am getting there but I am never just happy I always want more. Krista you should try the Nualgi stuff it has worked great for me so far.

All the time... ever since my first 120 sprang a leak things have never been the same. Battling algae and nitrate issues non stop. Then my tank got contaminated with heavy metals and killed a lot of my corals and inverts. I am hoping resrarting with a upcoming in wall tank will bring me better luck.

I have the trial bottle. It is packed right now, but after the move and the tank settles in, I will be using it. I did not want to do too many things at once and changing tanks takes first priority.

Totally understand. I had a small outbreak of cyno myself and after 8 weeks of use it has gone away and my corals have never looked better. I have used a lot of products throughout the years and this stuff is amazing.

yes I too am in the reef tank doldrums. I added optics to my home made leds two weeks ago and raised my fixture 8". apparently not nearly enough. in two days I had an algae explosion and nothing is happy in my tank. So I too will never use leds without a par meter again. sigh.

Definitely happens, but the feeling of when you feel great about your tank is just too awesome of a feeling. Especially when you get a bunch of frags and imagine their growth into the system.

It is also very satisfying when you finally resolve an issue to the system. I am currently in the winning stage against algae and it feels great.

I used to read about tank crashes but was lucky for many years until I experienced a crash myself. Bad part about it was I was a chalice freak and had almost every named high end piece (aprox 100 chalice)(colonies)and other psycho looking stuff until alk swings melted them away. I finally got everything stabilized and color is coming back. Feeling a little happier now and the fun part of collecting begins.

HAHA Krista yes I do and stuff like you mention perks me right back up! It sucks you back in every time! LOL!

Just did an over due water change and maintenance of entire system. That's when I ask " what was I thinking"? But now sitting watching my reef and World Cup , all is good:)

What 'bums' me out the most,
1.) This has already cost me the equivalent of an advanced education and there is still a whole bunch of stuff I want to buy
2.) Seems everybody's picture make me jealous of something
3.) All the bad stuff happens in an instant and all the good stuff takes forever
Yes this is hyperbole but when I'm bummed I tend towards the dramatic :llama:(no real reason for the jumping llama he's just cool)

I get bummed when I see a cool fish or coral and find out it's too big for my tank.

love the jumping llama lol - I'm kind of in a holding pattern on my tank right now. Going on vacation and don't want to add anything new. What's great about this hobby, is planning the new phase - I'm going to try my hand at sps following the vacation. I've only tried two pieces in the past and both perished :( one fell and I just can't keep montis for some bizarre reason.

Ugggh, don't get me started.
Tank failure, near-complete ruin of a fully-stocked FW tank that I loved, all kinds of crud...if nothing is ill or dying and there are no leaks, I'm happy as a clam.

When I bought my first tank, the guy I purchased it from gave me an incredible piece of advice that I've kept with me for years. He said "This will be a lot of work, you will be frustrated, equipment will break, fish will die and you will lose coral. Not even the best of the best reefers have 100% survival rate, if you are expecting that, this hobby isn't for you. You will want to give up, you will be upset, but if you stick it out, once your tank becomes healthy and fully established this will be the most rewarding hobby you have ever been apart of."

Yeah...a reefer told me something similar back around when I was starting...that you won't keep everything alive...and not to be ashamed when you lose something, because it even happens to the experts sometimes.
