I know you gotta pay to play and I wasn’t living in the cave that knew stuffs gotten expensive but boy that Red Sea energy is $145 plus tax for the 5L jug.

I am about to run out and thinking switching back to just acropower for my sps dominated and mixed reef tanks.

Will acropower sufficient for mixed reef for you out there?

Logistic likely more to blame than just prices rising. Low product availability will not increase existing demand but reduce existing supply. Simple macro economics. Should resolve itself once logistic log jams are resolved.

Why I tend to hoard products with long shelf life when on sale or try buying in bulk assuming my demand for it won’t dwindle should new and improved products appear in the not so distant future.

Same here I always buy bulk and got them on sale. I was waiting for this holiday sale but almost nothing is on sale. Looks like I am switching back to acropower.

Having not used either I can’t speak to that but do have a simple approach when deciding between competing products. I ignore cost first. Decide if both can perform the same function. Then go for the cheapest. If the answer is no then go for the one that provides the performance needed regardless of cost disparity.

If this turns political we’ll have to close this thread. I’ve already edited one post. Please no political references. Sorry we can’t watch these threads all day long so this is the only warning. Hope everyone understands.

Two years ago it cost around 6 grand to get a shipping container from China to US. Currently cost is upwards of 20k. The expenses get passed on to us.

When I read Flagg37's post about inflation, I knew a post like this was soon to follow.

What I would say about the cost of this hobby is that we, the hobbyist, drive the pricing. We create the demand. We are willing to spend, so, the manufacturers let us spend it.

There are plenty of DIY solutions out there which will help to save significant money.

You are wrong. You do not need to pay to play. You are getting caught up in advertising and social media. Stay in that lane and yes, it is expensive. It doesn't need to be expensive and there are plenty set ups running for years and decades that follow common sense.

Inflation is real as is the supply chain issues most of us in the world are facing but outside of that my statement above stands. The hobby is only as expensive as one makes it. It does not have to be though.

This hobby got expensive when sumps replaced canisters and UF. Now you need a controller. Calcium reactor. Refugium. Automated testing. ICP check ups. It’s gotten crazy. Good filtration and lighting specific to needs will get most by.

7.5% annual inflation.
7.5% My behind!!! I sell commercial products and we Have seen a 32-35% product increase across the board from most manufacturers from Nov 2020 to Dec 21. We hear 7.5 because that takes all products even those that don’t sell but make no mistake the key items and products are all double digit increase. Our shipping charges alone are also up over 25% and now have fuel surcharges all over the place. It’s going to get worse and so is supply chain shortages.

Agree 100% with you. Also there are TONS of great deals on gently used items from people leaving the hobby. Join some local FB pages in your area for hobbyist and you can get smoking deals. Keep the course man!

I have been scrounging parts for my system for about 4 months now. The power heads are the last and probably the largest hurdle for me.

If I can find some used for 60% of new I would buy them. But that's hard to do.

For sure. But really if we are being honest we do not need a controller, reactor, refugium, etc. Some of that of course is a quality of life improvement and I'll admit that is hard to put a price on. I look at hobbies as a residual income sort of thing. Some cost more to enter than others but at the end of the day we all have to set our ground rules.

We do have some options for DIY lights and dosing products that can lower the cost. It just depends on the hobbyist and their skill / comfort level to do it safely. But I do see your point and agree. All about balance :D

A lot of us often overlook the used market. This hobby and others. Some people like to upgrade and often sell their previous for less. Deals are out there and we should all look.

Great point!

Don’t get me wrong. I love convenience. Will overpay fit it. Just know I didn’t need it. Problem is the hobby promotes spending. Many likely not grasping exactly why they need something and just assuming they must have it. This drives prices up.

Fully agree - we are on the same page! You just said it better than I.
