Experiment converting corals to freshwater

They need to be sexually reproducing. Period. It would likely take years, and that's not considering how long it would take the OP to learn how to raise zoas from a larval stage

I think somewhere in this thread, he said he alredy started it. Maybe people are reacting poorly to this so called experiment is because the OP deosn't even have a reef tank until early this year.

If you think this "experiment" has anything to do with evolution, then you don't know what evolution is.

Again - whether or not corals could evolve to freshwater over millions of years has literally nothing to do with the OP putting a bunch of animals THAT ARE NOT SEXUALLY REPRODUCING in a box, and gradually killing them.

This is no different than putting a dog in a fish tank and slowly filling it with water, and expecting him to learn to breath water. It has exactly the same chance of success. Or putting a human being in a room and slowly sucking out the oxygen and expecting them to learn to convert CO2 into fresh oxygen.
Haha really? It's completely different to trying to drown a dog. It's like me living in Antarctica and then moving to a dessert. I'm still on land but I need to adapt to the new humidity, temperature ect. Its like going to space. When u come back your body need to adapt to the gravity. No different than a coral going into a different water type

I’ve heard some Torch corals actually grow in brackish saltwater at the mouth of where freshwater mixes with saltwater. Your best hope for success would be to use corals that grow and thrive in that environment. Maybe it’s possible to convert some to freshwater for a temporary time, but I personally feel the success, if any would be limited to very particular species.

No, it's more like the dog. Or you trying to breathe helium.

Every biological process in a coral is mediated by the water around that coral. Changing it is nothing like you going somewhere warm.

Looking through your past posts, you also wanted to try converting a Clownfish to to freshwater and asking people how much they would pay and to follow your YouTube channel.

Please don't torture animals for YouTube views. It's not why people are in this hobby.

Again, you don't know what evolution is. Evolution is a GRADUAL process that takes eons to see a measurable, significant change in the genotype of a population. And secondly, that's not evolution. That's natural selection. There was no breeding of those fruit flies for hundreds of generations and gene sequencing. You could absolutely do the same experiment with zoanthids. PLace 100 polyps of zoanthids into freshwater and record the results. I guarantee you, there will be no survivors and no "induced evolution". There is a reason no zoanthids have evolved to adapt to freshwater. It may occur over the course of millions of years, because of small gene changes, but it will not occur over 10 years under incompetent supervision. That's just not how evolution works.
THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!!! Evolution is over a LONG period of time, after multiple generations of sexual reproduction and mutation, and one person can't make it happen! All I ever said was that this was possible! Did I say that he specifically could do it? No! Did I say he could attempt it? Yes! What I am saying is that over the course of many many many years, scientists will develop something. It is possible. Maybe not in five years, but it is possible. This experiment probably won't work! You need multiple generations of reproduction! But all I said is its worth an attempt. That's what science is. Clearly you don't know that, so maybe you should pick up your biology book and study up.

for the record, i'd watch a youtube channel where you try to live in antarctica

Man I meant I've kept them for 16 years. Don't know if u can tell by now but I'm not the best at wording sentences
Don’t try and cover your tracks, your post saying your 16 makes perfect sense. First you’ve had fresh water then you say your 16 and salt water has taken over. If you’ve been in it for 16 years, salt water has taken over long ago. Your current tank is that of a beginner (not a bad thing, we all start somewhere). Just don’t try to play god, in a hobby you’re relatively new too. Stay in school and keep learning, please from all of us in the hobby.

You're encouraging him to kill animals for youtube hits.

Because I started my first reef tank this year? Your using that as a excuse? Who's to say I haven't had reef tanks all my life but its the first time setting one up myself?

Nothing to do with how long I've had something, I have a tropical tank with goldfish in. Yep cold water fish living in a tropical environment I must be abusing them and there gonna die within a week.

They've been in the tank almost 8 years lol. I know it's a bit different to putting them in saltwater but saying they can't adapt in that amount of time and that they would die if the tempiture changed by 5° that they would die. I've broken alot of rules keeping fish and it always works out. Sometimes by accident sometimes on purpose.

Haha mate do u want to see my birth certificate? What would age make a difference to? Again I'm not 16, sorry.

Why would that mean that I've had saltwater for years? I literally said I've always kept freshwater and I've just got into salt.

Did you forget where you said you’ve been in the hobby for 16 years?

Oh, so it is the same dude?

A long period of time does not constitute "a few years". His zoanthids are not sexually reproducing, they are not changing, they are just dying. And how much biology have you studied? What science qualifications do you have? I'm currently a sophomore in high school, and I took AP Biology and AP Chemistry last year; I got 5's on both of them. Your blatant lack of biology knowledge makes me wonder if you even passed freshman bio. If you're going to insult me, don't insult one of the very few things I'm good at.

Corals are living, I understand this is an experiment, but all this is going to accomplish is killing corals trough purposeful neglect. Personally if I seen this on YouTube you would get a thumbs down from me. I personally am fascinated by corals, watching them get killed by some guy who thinks he can undo millions of years of evolution in 1-5 years is crazy thinking. Some corals thrive in brackish water, maybe there’s some possibilities, but it’s very unlikely.

If you looking for success research obelia
