Feeling hopeless

Looks like normal algae that typically shows up in new tanks as it matures. The lack of RODI water is likely contributing to it.

It's kind of hard to go wrong with an RODI system, assuming its sized appropriately. Hop on BRS and see what they have in your price range. Perhaps someone from NYC can chime in, I'm not familiar with the water quality.
I have been looking at rodi equipment the past few days. Any suggestions?

.........

live rock and dry rock was from previous tank that I had for 3 years. I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and rinsed it.
I have live caribsea sand and imagitarium ocean water for my 55 gallon tank.
.......

I do not use a rodi or a ro to make new water. When I do a water change, i take out 10-15 percent of my water and I just put tap water into my tank and if the salinity level is low, I add salt to adjust it.
Please tell me if I am doing something wrong.....
You have been keeping marine aquarium for 3 years? I am speechless. You must spend a ton of money on animals over the last three years.
If these are true questions for help, I would just go over to the new to aquarium section and read information there.

Yes I found extra bac recommended on page one here.

A different brand was recommended after already adding dr Tims and being cycled. I'm mad but not at anyone other than bottle bac sellers, this guy too sells bottle bac and doesn't tell us cycles don't stall if you use seneye vs titration kits:

Your cycle is stalled in Passamaquoddy

Brown stuff is diatoms and associated with a newer tank and silicates in the sand. At this point with NO INSULT INTENDED :
S T O P !!!!
Take a breather and start with some basics. If you read the first 6-8 posts, you are chasing numbers, targeting numbers and getting stressed. Take a step back and grab a water sample from tank and take it to a trusted LFS (store) and have them test parameters for you and compare with your readings. I and many of us DO Not trust API test kits which are known for false readings, hence their cheap prices.
Once you find out what your parameters truly are, then you can react, , , , but typically - reaction is water change.
You Can reduce your white brightness a little for now which will keep algae in control. Take the time to enjoy your new setup rather than chasing numbers and DO ask questions or verify your progress along the way.
That's why we have forums.
Of course I was getting stressed because I was getting different suggestions on what it is and what to do. So, it all came down to waiting on my tank and let it cycle properly and monitoring the ammonia. I bought a salifert test for ammonia and have been feeding the fishes every other day. I realized the next thing I need to get is a rodi equipment because New York City is high on ammonia.
Yes I know I have to reduce the white, the white was only increased for the pic. But normally I got 100 percent plus and 25-30 percent white. I read on a current USA forum that this is the best percentage of lighting to have

anything is better than nothing , AL RO buddy is a good cheap starter works well. Also that black sand .......... youve been warned ;)

you would be best to stop everything and watch some of the BRS TV tank set up videos. You really have made some major mistakes throughout this entire process so far. Stop everything, learn before investing anymore money in water changes and chasing numbers. If you continue this path of 10 different forums and 100 different people giving you advice, you will certainly fail at this hobby. Maybe start here

I had the same fishes for 3 years. I had 10 fishes and was left with 6 fishes at the end in the span of 3 years. I honestly don’t know how they lasted so long. I ended up giving my fishes away.
During those years I was in it because I love the fishes and view but, it was upsetting to me that I invested so much money and couldn’t maintain it properly. So, I took a couple of months on a break to regather my thoughts and come back strong. I want a successful tank and I am going to be dedicated to be here. I am learning as I am going. I am telling my wife all of this as well so, another individual can help me if I am busy one day and can’t assist the fish tank. Besides, she loves it as well.

Sounds like you have an early handle on it. BRS and Marine Depot occasionally have RO units on sale.

You really just need to go back and familiarize yourself with the basics. There is plenty of info available on how to start a reef tank. YouTube is your friend. I highly recommend you looking up Melevs Reef on YouTube and watching his videos. Or read the link Orion provided. Or both really. We are here to help, but you also need to help yourself a bit.

When you say you have owned a reef tank for 3 years, there are certain things you would be expected to know.

I was on those websites the past few days. I have been looking at the product reviews and a few has an faucet adaptor which I need. I’m stuck between BRS 5 stage premium system and air water ice typhoon 5 stage system. hopefully I make up my mind by Monday..

Air/water/ice is a nice unit as is spectrapure.

How many days do you need to think about it? They do the same thing. I'd go with BRS for the good customer service and guaranteed product support down the line.

What you need is so basic and general. I would avoid asking question at this stage. @14 foot reef already posted a link for you to view and learn. Below also is a really good thread on setting up a marine aquarium. You need to view these.
Once you go over these resources, you will have great information to start your tank. Do not cut corner on basic equipment. This will cost you in the long term.
Invest in good aquarium with overflow, heater with temperature controller, refractometer, and good return pump. Auto top-off, and good sump is great but not essential. Even a small aquarium for sump is OK.

Needless to say, to keep delicate animals, you will need stability. The above equipment are need to keep the tank stable. Temperature and salinity stable is a must.

What you need is too basic and you don't know enough right now to separate good from stupid advices. Once you know the basic, you will know enough to not follow everyone's advises to the letter. This will cause to ro run in circle and crash your tank. Take everybody advises with a grain of salt, don't blindly follow. Basic marine aquarium keeping information is what you need

I cannot remember how I first set it up, when I began setting up my tank for the second time. I watched plenty of videos. The reason I did what I did was because various of videos that were doing the same, I followed. I didn’t go based on one video and did everything. Actually majority of the videos I would watch, they would add fishes the same day of setting everything up. But, I didn’t do that I let it “cycled” which majority of the videos didn’t even tell me to add fishes for it to cycle until I came here. I would watch Aaron’s aquarium, brs, coralfish12g, prestige reef, etc.

I want to see my options and get what’s the best for the tank. If I didn’t do research on the rodi system, I wouldn’t even know stage 5 is ideal for New York City water.

Just becasue it is on the internet does not mean it is good information. Use the two resource above and forget everything else you learn.
Add fish the same day you set the aquarium up, and add tap water tot he tank with living animals, then add salt to adjust salinity is so outrageously wrong that it is funny. It cause me to think this thread is a troll. That is how far out of the norm your method of water change is.

Don't worry about RO/DI now. RO is fine, 5 stage is not needed. See what I mean about wrong information.

Thank you for the link. I was able to learn things that the videos didn’t teach me. I was unaware that diatoms are formed first then the red algae and then green etc. i have everything else needed besides the sump, rodi and QT. My LFS that has been doing it for 30 years told me I didn’t need a sump for what I wanted As long as I’m doing the manually maintenance or even a protein skimmer. I even seen a few youtubers saying the same thing. I just thought it was information to take in from a person with 30 years experience and other people that is knowledgeable about it on YouTube videos as well.
In the beginning, I admit, I was following what other people were saying. But, then I realized when I followed one person, the other person would say something opposite, then another person against it etc. so, at this point, I’m trying to see my advices, search on it, and if it is accurate then I adjust. But, I followed 2 people and so far, their advices has helped my tank.

that is why I laid back and let my tank cycled since I didn’t let it cycle properly. I added livestock too quick which was my mistake. After reading that article, I believe I am going in the right step which is getting the rodi equipment and a better quality testing like red sea or Hannah checkers because at this point, I have salifert for a few testings and I do not like it. Other than that, I have majority of the required things for my tank. I primarily messed up when it came to cycling and adding live stock too quick.

Sump is needed because you can put things in the sump out of view. Thinks like heater need to be separate from some of mobile invertebrates. Snail craw on the heater will get injured when the heater turn on. Every tanks will need snails for algae control.
more essential, the water flow down to the sump will get oxygenated. And get CO2 off. This is important for the animals especially at night. You will eventually need a protein skimmer in the future. Skimmer in sump works a lot better than hang on back.

keeping a marine aquarium without a sump is possible but far from optimal. Hang on back overflow is full of problem. Best start out with a reef ready tank with build in overflow.

these are my personal experiences over the years.
