Filter sock replacements

What type of dollar store water bottles did you use? I'm curious about this idea.

I used the rings from the existing socks I used to use before and attached the 3” diameter bottles using tie rap on the inner side of the ring. This way the tie rap knot is on the inner side of the ring which helps the ring to snuggly fit into the holes made earlier for holding socks. Below is the link where I explain it in detail:

I like the look and they look easier to clean,I have two sump three socks in one and two in the other.its a chore to do them .

Looks like my ROTTER TUBES but these stay in the water, submerging the waste.

Hi RT I know what u r talking abt. The video was taken when I had finished installing them. I have increased the floss height so the water trickled thru them. I have already cleaned my first batch and man I tell ya the floss caught a lot of stuff and whatever is remaining my Reef Octopus takes care of it. Thanks

There are at least two more heading to the sates - in blue. $40 shipping from Australia! o_O Thomas is a pleasure to deal with though. I have two of those from Marine Depot. They did not fit my sump very well and the adjuster rings did not make them fit any better. The Anything Acrylic ones will be sized to the openings in my sump.

These look like an easy diy mod.
If filled with floss,do you find them as effective as a 100 or 200 micron filter sock?
I HATE cleaning filter socks and it looks like it would be a little less maintenance.

I just had a convo with him myself.
Going to get me a couple!

Sorry I don't really have a sock filter. How I made my sump filter is a 1/4 plexiglass cut to the what ever sized I wanted and drilled drain holes and I use poly-fil cut to the size I need.

I have been using mine just around 2 weeks now and i must say its a lot less mess than removing and tagging those filter socks...they are i think more effective than the filter socks because the water has to filter thru multiple layers of filter floss (depending on how you put the floss inside) before exiting the bottles. I am very happy with my diy mod and could'nt be more happier...i could not source these in Canada and hence i went with my diy but as effective as the commercial ones with a lot less cost and using the existing filter socks plastic rings.

I would like to find those cups that fit a Trigger 39 and have the holes on the sides, towards the bottom, not on the bottom. That way I can just wrap floss inside the perimeter a few times without it draining out the bottom and has to go through the floss to get out.

Until I gind those, I'll stick with my 50 micron socks.

I wish they made them to fit the eshopps square socks!

Now that's a hard sock to replace. As far as I know, Eshopps is the only maker of that shape and, I think, they only come in 200 micron (which is almost like nothing at all).

I have a custom sump for my 93 cube and the Eshopps would fit perfectly. But because of the 200 micron rating, and I use 50 micron, I had to pass.

Whatever the sock is rated for, for example 200 microns, that's usually the nominal rating, not the absolute rating. Meaning it only works at 200 micron 80% of the time. The other 20% is usually 50-100 microns higher depending on the sock. So 20% of that sock could be anywhere from 250-300 micron size.

I got this info from a custom filter sock company. But they also said absolute rated socks are only single use, and are not really for aquarium use.
