Finally!!!

Thanks very much! I'm VERY excited! I've been like a kid on Christmas morning! Can't stop watching lol. It's like a lightbulb went off in their head and suddenly they went from angry violence to crazy in love in a few seconds flat. This was a big part of why I got into saltwater!

I love that carpet anemone! Beautiful!! They say the clowns will host when they are ready / want to... this only goes to show. You should be excited... nemo sure is LOL :)

Are you going to remove the maroon, or let the attacks continue?

Are you sure that you have 3 females and 1 male? If that is true, look out when the mature, 3 females will become 1 female.

Lastly, is the mouth on that S. haddoni always open like that?

I removed the maroon but I'm tempted to answer "no I'm heartless and I love watching cute little animals suffer" in a sarcastic and biting tone.
Yes I'm sure about the sexes and yes I'm aware of their sequential hermaphroditic nature.
The S. Haddonis mouth has been open since the clowns took over. I've noticed one of them cleaning inside the mouth so figured it was a grooming issue. I'm aware that a constantly open mouth is a sign of a problem but since the hosting relationship coincides with this I doubt it's anything to worry about but I'll keep an eye out.

They aren't cleaning the mouth, and it isn't a good thing that it is happening.
The clowns being hosted should not cause the mouth to open, that would only happen if the anemone is being stressed.

But, since you want to use a "sarcastic and biting tone" when someone is showing concern, I will leave you be -- good luck.

You made it sound like I'd leave the clown in there for my amusement... but I digress. I appreciate your concern. And if you have any thoughts/ideas I'd love to hear them! I understand the meaning of the open mouth but given that there has been zero changes I'm not sure what if anything to do other than watch.

And I've been watching... They are in fact cleaning out the mouth. Of this I am certain. I'm watching them remove what appears to be waste from the mouth... normal or not this is what they are doing.

Just to let you know, it does not matter about the sexes of the clownfish, 3 will be a problem nomatter what the sexes are. Two will be a problem if both females obviously, but three will not work 99.99% of the time..... trust me, I have tried, and tried. I tried putting two pairs in a 110 gallon, removed one pair ofter 1 day. I did all of the rearranging the rock work. I had anemones, then didn't have anemones, etc. Then I tried it in a 180 gallon a couple years later, figured maybe this time It would be big enough for two sets.... nope. I love clownfish and I am jealous every time I see someone who has more than 2 in a tank, but that is very very rare that it works out like that, and definitely not in a 60g cube.

Carpet anemones good luck wish you the best.

beautiful carpet nem! why not throw in a BTA for the maroon as its a natural pair.. it should take to it quickly and lower some of the stress levels in the tank.
also Trex has given me very good and useful advice over the past few years, sometimes it comes out stiff but he definately knows his nems. his advice was what led me to keeping an extremely successful anemone tank for over 2 years until i lost it all in hurricane sandy. Good luck!

Thanks very much! i dunno why but i love me some carpet anemones!!
Last night I switched from using a 30g aquarium as a sump to an actual plexiglass sump thereby freeing up my old 30g tank to use as an anemone/clown tank. The maroon is alone in there now. He was going to die quickly in the other tank.
There are some who come here to dispense advice as an exercise in feeling superior. This hobby has very few facts and unlimited opinions. There are too many variables to believe in one way of doing things. When somebody states opinion as fact I stop listening... I'm all about sharing ideas! It's a part of why I like this hobby. Some get into this believing in a right way and wrong way. There are many paths to the same destination.... but I could be wrong

Ha, I am not here "dispense advice as an exercise in feeling superior", but glad that you think that.

Just here to offer advice; been keeping hosting anemones for 15+ years, and clowns for 20+ years and have plenty of mistakes, and just trying to help others, so they don't make the same mistakes. Some people are willing to take that advice, others aren't -- from your comments towards me I know what camp you fall into, and will keep that advice to myself -- good luck.

I'm here for advice and to chat. It wasn't your advice i took issue with. I believe it's telling that you believe this to be the case. We've just rubbed each other the wrong way and I'm sorry about that.

If you refer to my initial post I was just happy. I wasn't asking for advice... Then you say "or did I let the attacks continue". I'm sorry but there's nothing polite about that. I don't like the attitude but I respect the advice. If you can't dispense advice in a respectful manor than I don't want it. We'll each go our own way then.

Lets keep it peaceful guys we're all here because we share the same passions. I'm die hard clown and nem all day. My new tank I'm setting up will strictly run clowns and bta's I've never had luck with carpets so I stick with what i can Handel. I'm glad you found a tank for your maroon clown. Good luck

I appreciate it! My fathers tank I grew up with had a massive carpet I always loved, around 2-3ft diameter (see photo) I've been finding myself somewhat unconsciously recreating his tank. The symbiotic relationships always captivated me and was first and foremost on my mind when I decided to start a tank of my own.

awesome tank! i spend my time reefing with my daughters 4 and 6 yrs old i hope that the bond we build will give them a strong passion and respect for ocean life that may lead them to an interest in marine biology... hopefully if the children of today can learn to love and respect the oceans more and more generations will be able to enjoy the amazing life they provide...
good luck with your tank

It's so crazy... I never appreciated what my dad had done till now. I was around 13 when he started his reef. This was in early 80's! Pre-Internet! He had no reference material. He was a chemical engineer and he just figured out the chemistry on his own and fabricated his own equipment. I can't conceive of not having the net for ref!!! I remember watching all the hours he spent trying to make it thrive. There is no better way to teach just how fragile the ocean is. I couldn't imagine how anything in the ocean could live with all we've done. I'm sure your kids will learn. My dads a strict vegetarian as well. He NEVER tried to force it on my brother and I. He never "taught" us to care for the ocean or conservation. He just did his thing and we watched as kids will do and we put it all together later. Words like "awesome" get thrown around... but this stuff, this hobby, is truly so. Good luck with yours as well!
