TJ gave some good advice.

Honestly, I hate giving recommendations; there are so many choices and what will appeal to you is a matter of personal taste. :)

totally understand that, I guess I like so many, im having a hard time nailing it down. Hearing some of your favorites might be a bit helpful. guess Ill just need to reread your advice on mixing and matching the different varieties and come up with a more solid list.
I know you have quite a few and are kinda the resident wrasse expert, thats why I tagged ya. thanks for poppin in

about to pull the trigger and get my first fish. Seriously considering a borbonius anthias, unless somebody can give me good reason not to....

What about a white tail tang? I picked one up from NY Aquatics a few years back and its such a beautiful fish. Doesnt get too large and great center piece. Have you considered a leopard wrasse? I know they are difficult to keep but if you are up for the challenge, they add great movement and color to the tank as well. My upgrade to my 120 is going to be around coral and wrasses. Glad to see your tank is doing well and still cant get over your aquascape lol

the whitetail, might be a great addition. Its definitely a good looking fish, and not super popular. love the coloration of it and have noticed that NYA has a few as well.
leopards are awesome, perhaps down the line a bit. still working out the wrasse list.

cant get over my scape!? does that mean you like it? ;) thanks for the compliment,
wasnt too hard, just takes some patience, lotsa nice tonga branch and some emarco400

first fish is coming next week!! getting things ready this weekend for the new arrival. Was seriously considering just adding fish to the DT, since it is currently
empty, but worried about possible contamination due to diseases. So, im gonna set up a QT today.

have plenty of extra tanks, heaters, etc, but trying to find the right filter. cant seem to find my old aquaclean, whattaya think about using a penguin biowheel for the QT?
I know I could also just use sponge filters/air pump, but would prefer the HOB option. plus the hob has the option of adding carbon and other filters if necessary. Should I keep the biowheel in the DT sump, to get it going until im ready to use it, as I would a sponge?? seems reasonable but im pretty sure they float. ha

That's all I use.
I keep a filter pad for it in the sump of my DT to start with something nice and seeded when I need to setup the QT.

Yes, as in the cartridge in the back.

I use the wheel, but I start with it dry each time.

thanks for the tips. it came with a cartridge, but its a carbon filter, and wasnt sure if that was the one to use. are there other options? do you use a new wheel and pad each time?
youre always a great help!

Yeah, there's carbon in the filter, but carbon is only effective for about 7 days. At a minimum, the pad is in my sump for 3 weeks before use. After the QT is completed, I toss it.

As for the wheel, I've never changed it. It gets completely dried in the time the QT is broken down.

AWESOME! thanks for the replies, much appreciated.
one more, do you use/keep the wheel in while dosing prazipro?

Yes.

QT for me is pretty set-it-and-forget-it. Feed and do water changes, use prazi, wait 6 weeks.

Borbonius shipping this week!! cant wait. got the QT all set up and running. and a few other goodies(killer plate and clam) coming in too! plate and clam, going in the 30 nano for now

I love seeing fish lists that include more than just tangs! A few suggestions, which you can take or leave. :)

I think a blenny adds a lot to any tank, based on their unique swimming pattern and personality. Some colorful ones to consider are Midas blenny and forktail blenny (liveaquaria's picture doesn't look like much, but you can google the scientific name for a good look at the colors). Either would do well with your other fish.

I also think a royal gramma makes a fabulous addition to almost any rank. They are common, but such a splash of vivid color makes it easy to see why.

You have some amazing wrasses on your list! I'd also consider the ruby head fairy (cf cyanopleura), one that seems to keep its saturated colors in tanks I've seen it in, which can't be said for every fairy wrasse.

Choosing fish is a huge part of the fun!

thanks for the feedback and actually reading the list! ;)

Yeah, just one tang for my tank, its only a 120(48x24), so im not trying to push it with too many tangs/large fish. but a black tang would be the bees knees!

blennies are cool and are being considered. Theres a few that I like, Ill have to check out your suggestions. Really hoping for a pair of rubyred dragonets and maybe add a blenny in as well.

Agreed, the RG is a common fish, but great colors for the tank/contrast.

yeah, wrasses have been my favorite fishes for quite some time. Love the colors, personalities, and great amount of variety...all while being "reef safe".

choosing fish is great fun. Im really glad that I started putting together a list of wants/needs and compatibility. Its been helpful for me to think about the tank and its inhabitants as a whole.

I've got a cf cyanopleaura that's not that bad. Got him during the initial phase and within a few months he's went terminal. Swims all over the place but spends a majority of the time in the subdued lit half of my tank.
