Aside from the big budget mind blowing builds we all love to check out, this is one of the most impressive setups I have come across. Your attention to detail, and the level of planning, is something I hope to achieve. Thank you for taking the time to share your efforts here.

Thank you for the kind words, It's been a pleasure to share this build with all of the great members of this forum.

First gen AI SOLs.

I know I said in a previous post that I was going to automate the light rack, but after buying everything I decided to go with a fixed design.

My review... Please feel free to ask questions or share.

Equipment Reviewing
: Maxspect Gyre XF150

Date Purchased: 5/14/2015
Condition: New
Overall rating (1-5): 4.5
Would you recommend it, why/why not: Yes (see additional info)

Pro:
  • Moves tons of water horizontally
  • Helps keep detritus suspended allowing removal by mechanical filtration
  • Easy to setup and dial in
  • Placement orientation
  • Flow cages orientation (adjustable)
  • Manufactures videos on setup, maintenance & troubleshooting, and alternating mode
  • Price
Cons:
  • Manufactures recommended clean interval (once a month)
  • Length of cord (wish is was a bit longer)
  • No labeling on propeller blades

Additional info:
  • Unit is mounted about 2” to 3” under the DT water line, it’s set at 70% power and left in normal operation mode (plan is to cycle through each mode in 2 week increments). The amount of detritus that it moved was very surprising, not only close-up off rock-scape and sand closest to it but also far away. The unit is extremely quiet, I couldn’t hear it running and at first I had to look close at the propeller blades to even know it was operating as it didn’t make any noise to give it away. The setup took less than 5min, from unbox to a quick rinse with RO/DI water and placement in the tank. Started the unit low about 4” off the sand bed, it moved so much detritus around, almost looked like a sand storm without the sand. Flow cages have a dial indicator on them that allows you to tweak the orientation a bit maximizing intake and horizontal flow. The unit came with “quick setup” instructions but truth be told I liked the videos better, the box has information on all 3 of the videos and was worth my time watching them
  • I don’t know if I will or will not have the time to follow the recommendation on cleaning intervals but, if you want the best performance I guess you must, will have to see how that goes. The length of the cord is a bit short, if you like I, don’t have or plan to mount the controller close to or under the tank, a bit longer cord or extender would be great. The flow cages are labeled with either an “A” or “B” but the same cannot be said for the propeller blades… that’s really more of a “nice to have” but when trying “alternating mode” would make it “plug-n-play” as you wouldn’t have to reference the owner’s manual for proper choice.
  • Look I’m not saying it’s the end all be all of power heads, but nothing out there moves water horizontally like the gyre and for the price it’ll be hard to beat it!

That's 4 weeks of growing and this is what I have to show for it, I'm a little impressed..
The Cheato is covering a little over half the trough, and has started to form, what looks like braided strands, kind'a cool look'n... :D
