Fishroom Reality Check

Can you upload pics of the fish with black ich?

I can try once I pass along this sleeping baby, but the YT is super skittish and won’t stay still for long.

It looks exactly like what I saw in the store a few months ago, but smaller (since the haven’t been growing so long)

Here’s the old pic- not my tang, but spots are the same

If it looks like that it's black ich.

Prazipro struggles to erradicate black ich most of the time. You may need to do a formalin bath.

Well crap- I thought Prazipro was the go to. Guess I read wrong. Going from the turbellarians thread from humblefish.

Ruby reef rally doesn’t have formalin, right? That’s all I have available today

Try prazi first. It may work.

If black ich, your prazi plan is a good idea.

Man, Neil. You are getting too much experience treating sick fish! Are they eating nori yet?

Lol, no. Tried 6 times with the tangs but no dice haven’t seen them touch it more than maybe 5-6 nips the first time I put some in

I apparently have the knack for turning omnivores into full on carnivores.

Neither my tangs nor MJF eat any greens- but they go NUTS for formula 2 pellets and mysis shrimp

I only had luck after I placed it on a piece of PVC with a rubber band. Keep trying though. They need it I believe.

I didn't realise you were still attempting to get the boogers to eat nori. This is a quick pick of what usually works for me. It is more stable, does not move as much and spook them, sometimes I have to cut it in strips to get them eating it. The selcon really seems to help too.

Here’s what I’m dealing with in the tangs

You’ll need to look at the YouTube version to see it- apparently linking to it down-rez it and you can’t see anything

Plan: today

Moved to a 10g with old water while I do a 100% water change and sanitize 20l before return.

Freshwater dip to provide relief.

Copper to 1.80 to continue that, Prazipro and Met to treat Tubs and continue on original QT plan.

Plan: ongoing

Third Prazipro dose in 5 days. Will move to 10 g at this point so I can totally sanitize 20long

37% UPC grade Formalin arrives between Friday 15 and wed 20.

Perform 2 formalin baths, max 45 minutes, 48 - 72 hours apart.

Into a clean 20long for 30 days observation.

@HotRocks, @4FordFamily

How’s that sound? I already did one Prazipro treatment 3 days ago with apparently zero effect. Nothing dislodged, didn’t seem to provide relief. Hence the Formalin plan.

Anything to the idea that formalin causes death in 18-24 months? Other than a few anecdotal experiences?

I think you have a solid plan.

Here is the deal on formalin, we don't know for sure the long term effects. I don't think you'd have any issues within the 18-24mo range.

The only other thing you can try if you are hesitant to use formalin is hypo. It's a 50/50 shot.

Thanks HotRocks.

I’ll mull over the hypo. What’s 50/50 about it? If I’m going to lose one now due to hypo, or in 24 months due to cancer, I’d probably do the formalin.

So- that was a stressful 3 hours, lol

But the FW dip did wonders.

Before-

Immediately after, back in the tank

I can see 2-3 worms still attached, but the vast majority fell off in the last minute of the dip. I might try to get some under the scope, since I’m a gross nerd

I do my dips in a 5 gal bucket with a square colander, an air stone and heater. 2.5 gallons. Pre oxygenate while the water is coming up to temp. Basement at 67 to 78of takes about 90 minutes. Exactly 5 mins then pull the pink strings to raise the colander- to avoid that tail spike- and into the fresh tank

The first Prazipro did nothing. I’m probably looking at s Prazipro resistant worm. Because why would it be an ‘easy’ curveball ?

Sorry, I should have clarified that the 50/50 was in relation to hypo successfully erradicating the black ich.

Excellent write up on your process! What water do you use for a freshwater dip? Do not say the "fresh kind" Neil! :)
Freshwater = RO water.

Lol, would I?

RODI with a little spritz of DT water to balance out the pH. And to stop the DI part being too harsh.

I temp and salinity match (easy since all my tanks are at the same salinity) and heavily aerate, but it’s just RODI that’s been sitting in the barrel. My usage rate is such that it only ever sits around for like a week
